Stability control systems

~3min read

Anti-slip regulation (ASR) and Electronic Stability Programme (ESP)

Anti-slip regulation optimises traction to prevent the driven wheels from spinning, by acting on the brakes of the driven wheels and on the engine.

Electronic stability control acts on the brake of one or more wheels and on the engine to keep the vehicle on the path intended by the driver, within the limits of the laws of physics.

Intelligent Traction Control ("Snow Motion")

Your vehicle is equipped with an intelligent traction control system: "Snow Motion".

This automatic function continuously detects low-grip situations that can make starting off and progressing difficult in deep fresh snow or on compacted snow.

In these situations, the "Snow Motion" system takes over from the ASR function by optimising wheel slip at the front wheels, to ensure good traction and directional stability, even without snow tyres, with or without snow chains.

On vehicles fitted with Hydractive III+ suspension, manually setting the ground clearance to the intermediate position further improves progress in deep snow (see the corresponding section).

In extremely severe conditions (snow over ice, sand, deep mud…), it may be useful to deactivate the ESP/ASR systems so the wheels can spin and regain grip.

Activation

These systems are automatically activated each time the vehicle starts.

In the event of a grip or trajectory problem, these systems come into operation.

de ce témoin au combiné.This is indicated by the flashing of this warning light in the instrument cluster.

Deactivation

In exceptional conditions (starting a vehicle stuck in mud, immobilised in snow, on soft ground…), it may be useful to deactivate the ASR and ESP systems so the wheels can spin and regain grip.

Neutralisation
Deactivation

  • Press the "ESP OFF" button, located in the middle of the dashboard.

et du voyant du bouton indique la neutralisation des systèmes asr et esp.If this warning lamp lights up on the instrument panel, and the button indicator lights up, it indicates that the ASR and ESP systems are deactivated.

Reactivation

These systems reactivate automatically after each ignition switch-off or from 50 km/h.

  • Press the "ESP OFF" button again to reactivate these systems manually.

Malfunction

d’un signal sonore et d’un message sur l’écran du combiné, indique un dysfonctionnementIf this warning lamp lights up, accompanied by an audible signal and a message on the instrument panel display, it indicates a malfunction of these systems.

Have it checked by a Citroën dealer.

The ASR/ESP systems provide an additional level of safety during normal driving, but must not encourage the driver to take extra risks or drive at excessive speeds. These systems operate correctly only if the manufacturer's recommendations are followed regarding wheels (tyres and rims), braking components, electronic components and the fitting and repair procedures of the Citroën dealer network. After an impact, have these systems checked by a Citroën dealer.
