The airbags are designed to improve occupant protection (except for the rear centre seat passenger) in the event of a severe collision. They supplement the seat belts, which are fitted with load limiters (except for the rear centre seat passenger).

During a collision, electronic sensors detect and analyse frontal and side impacts in the impact detection zones:

  • in the event of a severe collision, the airbags inflate immediately, providing better protection for vehicle occupants (except for the rear centre seat passenger); immediately after the collision, the gas in the airbag escapes so as not to obstruct visibility and to facilitate occupants' exit if necessary,
  • in the event of a minor collision, an impact to the rear, or in certain rollover conditions, the airbags may not deploy; in such situations, the seat belts are the only protection.
Airbags only operate when the ignition is switched on.

Airbags deploy only once. In the event of a further collision (during the same or another accident), the airbag will not deploy.

Impact detection zones

  1. Frontal impact zone.
  2. Side impact zone.
Deployment of the airbag(s) is accompanied by release of smoke and a noise caused by firing of the pyrotechnic charge built into the system. The smoke is harmless, but may irritate people with allergies. The noise of deployment of one or more airbags may temporarily impair hearing.
