Starting the engine

~2min read
  • Apply the parking brake.
  • Manual gearbox: set the lever to neutral and fully depress the clutch pedal.
  • Robotised gearbox: set the lever to N and fully depress the brake pedal.
  • Automatic gearbox: set the lever to P and fully depress the brake pedal.
  • Insert the key into the ignition switch. The system recognises the starting code.
  • Unlock the steering wheel by turning the steering wheel and the key at the same time.
In some cases, turning the steering wheel may require considerable force (e.g. when the wheels are turned fully).
  • Petrol engine versions: turn the key to position 3 and hold it until the engine starts, without accelerating.

As soon as the engine starts, release the key.

  • Diesel engine versions: turn the key to position 2 (ignition on) to activate the glow plugs.

Wait for the warning light in the instrument cluster to go out, then start the engine by turning the key to position 3 and holding it until the engine starts, without pressing the accelerator. As soon as the engine starts, release the key.

In winter conditions the warning light may stay on longer. Once the engine is warm, the warning light will not come on. If the engine does not start immediately, switch off the ignition. Wait a few seconds before trying again. If the engine does not start after several attempts, do not insist: this could damage the starter motor and the engine. Contact a CITROËN dealer or a specialist workshop. In mild weather, do not warm up the engine while the vehicle is stationary. Set off immediately and drive at moderate engine speed. Never leave the engine running in an enclosed space without adequate ventilation: combustion engines emit toxic exhaust gases such as carbon monoxide. This risks poisoning and death. In very severe winter conditions (below -23°C), to ensure correct engine operation and the durability of the engine, gearbox and mechanical parts, let the engine run for 4 minutes before setting off.
