Global Customer Symptom Codes (GCSC) Table
The diagnosis in this manual assumes a certain level of skill and knowledge of Ford-approved diagnostic procedures. REFER TO: Diagnostic Methods (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).
DIAGNOSTIC TEST A: TRANSMISSION SHUDDER - SEVERE SHUDDER ON REVERSE TO DRIVE SHIFT
Normal Operation and Fault Symptoms
The drivetrain system generates power with the engine and transmits it through the transmission and, if equipped, the transfer case, to propel the vehicle. Rotational torque from the transmission or transfer case is delivered to the front and rear axles through the driveshafts. Universal joints (U-joints) at the ends of the shafts allow the shafts to rotate smoothly through the permissible angle range. Torque is input to the interaxle differential, which drives the axle shafts.
Possible Sources
Damaged or worn driveshaft U-joint
A1 CHECK THE DRIVESHAFT CV (CONSTANT VELOCITY) JOINT FOR WEAR OR DAMAGE
Inspect the driveshaft joints for wear or damage.
Was any damage found?
Yes
Install a new driveshaft as necessary. REFER TO: Rear Driveshaft (205-01 Driveshaft, Removal and Installation).
No
Inspect the vehicle for other symptoms related to the driveshaft.
DIAGNOSTIC TEST B: TRANSMISSION SHUDDER - OCCURS WHEN VEHICLE BEGINS TO MOVE FORWARD FROM A STOP

DIAGNOSTIC TEST C: JUDDER - JUDDERING NOISE THE SAME AT CRUISE OR COAST/DECELERATION
DIAGNOSTIC TEST D: THUMP OR BOOM - NOISE OCCURS ON COAST/DECELERATION, DRIVESHAFT USUALLY SPEED-RELATED AND NOTICEABLE OVER A WIDE SPEED RANGE

DIAGNOSTIC TEST E: GRUNT, USUALLY ASSOCIATED WITH DRIVELINE SHUCK, EXPERIENCED DURING ACCELERATION FROM A COMPLETE STOP
