Normal Operation and Fault Symptoms
When the ABS module receives the parking brake apply or release request, the ABS module supplies voltage to the parking brake actuator motors. The ABS module also monitors the current drawn by the actuator motors to determine when the brake pads contact the brake disc, to determine when the appropriate clamping force is applied to the brake disc, and to determine when the brake pads are retracted to the home position. A fault or problem with the HS-CAN causes the inability to release the parking brake. The ABS module runs self-tests before, during and after the apply or release request. These self-checks are performed to determine parking brake functionality. High resistance in the actuator motor circuit, a short to ground, a short to voltage, an open circuit, a mechanical or electrical failure of the actuator motor, or an internal ABS module fault can cause one or more of these self-checks to fail, causing the ABS module to set one or more diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). The actuator motors have a serviceable jumper harness connecting the actuator motor to the body wire harness at C410 for the left-hand actuator motor and the right-hand actuator motor.
