Ford Escape: Engine System - General Information / General Procedures

NOTE

Engine Diagnostic Mode is a hybrid transaxle control module strategy that is separate from normal operation strategy. The features described here apply only to power-split hybrid variants. In this mode, the engine runs and does not shut off as it does during normal operation. Engine speed can be increased to the desired speed when the vehicle is in park mode. To enable the engine running diagnostic mode, the selector lever must be in PARK and the ignition must be in the START position. The engine is allowed to idle as long as the transaxle and hybrid electrical systems operate within calibrated limits. This mode is useful when the engine must remain running for diagnosis and repairs that require the engine to idle for an extended period. Perform the following sequence to activate this mode.

To increase the chance of success, make sure the vehicle is completely powered down before starting the procedure.
Apply the parking brake.

Make sure the shift selector is in PARK and the ignition is OFF.

Do not start the engine.

Turn the ignition ON, leaving the engine off.

Within 5 seconds of turning the ignition on, fully depress the accelerator pedal and hold for 10 seconds.

Release the accelerator pedal, and within 5 seconds apply the brake, shift the vehicle into drive (D), release the brake, and immediately depress the accelerator pedal for 10 seconds.

Release the accelerator pedal and move the shift selector to PARK within 5 seconds (it is not necessary to apply the brake when shifting to park [P]).

NOTE
If the sequence is performed correctly, the powertrain malfunction indicator lamp (wrench light) flashes once per second when the shift selector is in PARK. The engine can be started by turning the ignition to the START position. The hybrid transaxle control module exits engine running mode when the shift selector is moved to any position other than PARK, when the ignition is turned to OFF or ACC, or when the powertrain or hybrid electrical system exceeds calibrated limits.
If this procedure fails, turn the ignition OFF and allow the vehicle to power down completely for 10-15 seconds. Once this time has elapsed, try to repeat this procedure, starting from step 1.
