Make sure the intelligent remote control is within 3 ft (1 m) of the liftgate.

  1. Stand behind your vehicle facing the liftgate.
  2. Move your foot in one motion, without pausing, under and to the side out of the rear bumper detection zone.
  3. The liftgate opens or closes.

Avoid the following actions when using the hands-free liftgate feature:

  • Physical contact with the bumper.
  • Keeping your foot under the bumper.
  • Swinging your foot from side to side or kicking at an unusual angle.

Detection Zones

Vehicles without a trailer hitch

The detection zone is at the center of the rear bumper.

Vehicles with a trailer hitch

The detection zone is to the left and right of the trailer hitch, between the exhaust and the hitch.
