Pinpoint Tests

Pulls / Vehicle Drift

Diagnostic Overview

The diagnosis in this manual assumes a certain level of skill and knowledge of Ford-approved diagnostic procedures.
REFER TO: Diagnostic Methods (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).

Possible Causes

  • Unevenly loaded vehicle
  • Tire Pressure
  • Tire forces
  • Brake drag
  • Incorrect vehicle alignment
  • Steering

DIAGNOSTIC TEST A: VEHICLE DRIFTS / PULLS
A1 CHECK FOR AN UNEVENLY LOADED VEHICLE
  • Visually inspect the vehicle for an uneven load.

Is the vehicle unevenly loaded?
Yes ADVISE the customer of the uneven load.
No GO to A2
A2 CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE AND TIRE CONDITION
  • Check the tire pressures. Refer to the VC label located on the driver door pillar. Check the tires for uneven/abnormal wear.
REFER TO: Wheels and Tires (204-04A Wheels and Tires, Diagnosis and Testing).

Are the tire pressure and tire condition correct?
Yes GO to A3
No ADJUST the tire pressure to the specified value or, if necessary, INSTALL new tires.
A3 TIRE ISOLATION / ENGINE MOUNT / DRIVELINE CHECK
  • Cross the front wheel and tire assemblies from left to right.
REFER TO: Wheels and Tires (204-04A Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation).

Does the vehicle drift/pull?
Yes If the vehicle pulls or drifts in the direction of the tire force, rotate the front wheel and tire assemblies front to rear. Refer to the appropriate section in Group 204 for the procedure. If the vehicle pulls or drifts in the same direction, GO TO A4.
No The tire forces were causing the drift/pull and the condition was resolved.
A4 CHECK SUBFRAME ALIGNMENT
  • Using the following measurements, check the subframe alignment.
    • Location 1 — 260 mm (10.236 in).
    • Location 2 — 666 mm (26.22 in).

Is the subframe correctly aligned?
Yes GO to A5
No REMOVE and DISCARD the 2 rear subframe bolts. Loosen the 2 front subframe bolts. Using the measurements listed above, ALIGN the subframe. TIGHTEN the 2 front subframe bolts to 60 N·m (44 lb-ft). TIGHTEN the 2 new rear subframe bolts to 100 N·m. TURN the 2 new rear subframe bolts an additional 240 degrees. Reset the vehicle wheel alignment angles after moving the subframe. ADJUST the alignment as necessary.
REFER TO: Front Wheel Alignment Adjustment (204-00 Suspension System - General Information, General Procedures).
A5 CHECK BRAKE DRAG
  • Manually rotate all four wheel and tire assemblies and check for brake drag.

Do the wheels turn freely?
Yes GO to A6
No To diagnose the brake drag condition,
REFER TO: Brake System (206-00 Brake System - General Information, Diagnosis and Testing).
A6 CHECK WHEEL ALIGNMENT
  • Using the wheel alignment equipment and the manufacturer's instructions, check the wheel alignment.

Is the wheel alignment out of specification?
Yes ADJUST the alignment as necessary.
REFER TO: Front Wheel Toe Adjustment (204-00 Suspension System - General Information, General Procedures).
No To diagnose the drift/pull/wander steering system condition, refer to the appropriate section in Group 211 for the procedure.

Component Tests

Ball Joint Inspection

  1. Before checking the ball joints for wear, check the wheel bearings. If necessary, install a new wheel bearing.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle by the frame so the wheels hang in their natural position.
REFER TO: Lifting and Jacking - Overview (100-02 Jacking and Lifting, Description and Operation).
  2. Inspect the ball joint and ball joint dust boot for damage.
    • If the ball joint or the ball joint dust boot is damaged, install a new lower arm assembly as necessary.
REFER TO: Lower Arm (204-01 Front Suspension, Removal and Installation).

NOTICE: Do not use any tools or equipment to move the wheel and tire assembly or suspension components when checking for relative movement. Suspension damage may occur. Using tools or equipment will also create relative movement that may not occur when using hand force. Relative movement must be measured using hand force only.

  1. Inspect the ball joint for relative movement by alternately pulling down and pushing up on the lower control arm by hand. Note any relative vertical movement between the steering knuckle and the lower control arm at the lower ball joint.
    • If relative movement is not felt or seen, the ball joint is good. Do not install a new ball joint.
    • If relative movement is detected, go to step 5.
  1. To measure ball joint deflection, attach a suitable dial indicator with a flexible lever between the lower control arm and the steering knuckle or ball joint stud.
  2. Measure the ball joint deflection while an assistant manually pushes the lower control arm up and down.
    • If the deflection exceeds the specification, install a new lower arm assembly.
REFER TO: Lower Arm (204-01 Front Suspension, Removal and Installation).
    • If the deflection is within the specification, no further action is required.
