Charging System - Overview. Description and Operation
Overview
The generator is driven by the FEAD belt. When the engine is started, the generator begins to produce alternating voltage, which is internally converted to direct voltage. The voltage level is monitored by the voltage regulator (located on the rear of the generator) and supplied to the battery. The PCM works with the internal voltage regulator of the generator through two communication circuits, GENMON and GENCOM, to control the voltage regulator setpoint.
This vehicle is equipped with a load shed strategy. The BCM monitors the battery state of charge using a battery current sensor attached to the negative battery cable. The PCM monitors generator current using a generator current sensor attached to the generator B+ battery cable. The PCM uses information from the generator current sensor to adjust engine idle stability and torque control.
