Transmission Cooling - Overview - Description and Operation
Transmission Oil Cooler - 1.5 L EcoBoost
This vehicle is equipped with an external transmission fluid cooler. The transmission fluid cooler is an oil-to-coolant cooler mounted on the left side of the radiator. The cooling system also consists of a thermal bypass valve mounted on the top of the transmission and a transmission fluid warmer mounted on the top of the transmission. When the transmission fluid temperature is below normal operating temperature, transmission fluid flows from the transmission to the warmer, which uses warm engine coolant to heat the transmission fluid. The transmission fluid then flows to the thermal bypass valve and back to the transmission. When the transmission fluid is at or above normal operating temperature, the valve in the engine cooling circuit closes, shutting off the coolant supply to the transmission fluid warmer. The thermal bypass valve opens, allowing transmission fluid to flow from the transmission through the cooler and back to the transmission. The transmission fluid cooler transfers heat from the transmission fluid to the engine coolant.
Transmission Oil Cooler - 2 L EcoBoost
This vehicle is equipped with an external transmission fluid cooler. The transmission fluid cooler is an oil-to-air cooler mounted in front of the A/C condenser. The cooling system also consists of a thermal bypass valve mounted on the radiator, and a transmission fluid warmer mounted on the top of the transmission. The transmission fluid cooler transfers heat from the transmission fluid to the ambient air.
Transmission Cooling - 2.5 L
This vehicle is equipped with an external transmission fluid cooler. The transmission fluid cooler is an oil-to-coolant cooler mounted on the left side of the radiator. The cooling system also consists of a thermal bypass valve mounted on the top of the transmission. When the transmission fluid temperature is below normal operating temperature, transmission fluid flows from the transmission to the thermal bypass valve and back to the transmission. When the transmission fluid is at or above normal operating temperature, the thermal bypass valve opens, allowing transmission fluid to flow from the transmission through the cooler and back to the transmission. The transmission fluid cooler transfers heat from the transmission fluid to the engine coolant.
