Flushing
NOTICE: If the plastic transmission cooler partition has melted due to overheating, install a new cooler. The plastic cannot be cleaned from the cooler, even with the cooler flushing system heated.
- The transmission cooling system (radiator and lines) MUST be flushed every time a transmission overhaul or replacement is performed to minimize the chance of a repeat repair. It is essential that proper equipment and procedures are followed when flushing the coolers/lines. The flushing equipment used MUST:
- maintain fluid temperature at 140 °F (60 °C) or higher,
- pulse the fluid during cleaning,
- have a GPM flow meter,
- have dual magnetic filters,
- and be capable of air purging before and after flushing.
- If equipment meeting the above specifications is not available, replace the transmission fluid cooler(s) and clean the lines manually.
- Check and top up the transmission fluid level in the heated transmission cooling system flushing device.
Use general equipment: Transmission cooling system heated flushing tube
Material: Motorcraft® MERCON® LV Automatic Transmission Fluid / XT-10-QLVC (WSS-M2C938-A) (MERCON® LV) - Turn on the heater and let the fluid in the cooler flusher circulate through the lines for 15-30 minutes to heat it to 60 °C before use.
- If equipped with a cooler bypass valve, disconnect the transmission fluid cooler lines from the cooler bypass valve before backflushing and cleaning.
- Install the line adapters on the transmission fluid cooler tubes.
- Connect the red cooler line flushing line to the transmission fluid cooler assembly inlet fitting. Refer to the transmission fluid cooler inlet and outlet fitting locations.
- Connect the blue cooler flush line to the transmission fluid cooler outlet tube assembly.
- Follow the equipment instructions to clean the transmission fluid cooler tubes and transmission fluid cooler before starting the flushing procedure.
- Allow the transmission cooling system to backflush for 10-15 minutes, then flush the transmission fluid cooler in the normal flow direction for another 10-15 minutes.
- If the heated transmission cooling system flush machine is equipped with a control micron filter:
- Remove and clean the 28-micron Oberg filter.
- Install the filter.
- Flush the system for 5 minutes.
- Remove and inspect the filter.
- If debris/contamination is present on the filter, repeat step 10.
- If equipped, remove the fluid cooler lines mounted on the transmission from the transmission.
- Clean the fluid cooler lines mounted on the transmission.
- If equipped, remove and discard the cooler bypass valve. Install a new cooler bypass valve.
