Biodiesel
Biodiesel is a renewable fuel made from vegetable oils or animal fats that is chemically modified to make it compatible with diesel fuel.
Biodiesel blends
Fuel with biodiesel content of up to 20% by volume (known as B20) may be used. Use only biodiesel blends up to 20% by volume that meet the requirements of your country or regional fuel standards.
As a renewable fuel, biodiesel offers some environmental benefits. However, biodiesel has unique properties and must be operated differently than diesel fuel. Its use involves additional risks and may not be suitable for all situations. Certain vehicle operating conditions increase these risks and should be avoided.
The quality of biodiesel fuel deteriorates over time and under high temperatures faster than ultra low sulfur diesel fuel. Refueling more often provides the best opportunity to keep a supply of fresh fuel. Storage at high ambient temperatures will accelerate biodiesel degradation.
If the vehicle is used infrequently and consumes little fuel, or if it is stored for long periods, avoid using biodiesel blends above 5% by volume. When the vehicle is stored for more than one month, run the fuel level down to below one quarter of the tank, refuel with fuel that does not contain biodiesel, and drive several kilometers (miles) before storage.
