Driving and Operation

Refueling the Tank (Diesel)

~3min read
  • To avoid injury and other damage, read and follow all instructions on the fuel pump island.
  • Turn off the engine when refueling.
  • Keep sparks, flames and smoking materials away from fuel.
  • Do not leave the fuel pump unattended.
  • Avoid using electronic devices while refueling.
  • Do not re-enter the vehicle while pumping fuel.
  • Keep children away from the fuel pump and never allow children to pump fuel.
  • Fuel may spray out if the fuel cap is opened too quickly. This spray may occur if the tank is almost full, and more likely in hot weather. Slowly open the fuel tank cap and wait for any hissing to stop, then unscrew the cap completely.
GMC Terrain. Filling the Tank (Diesel)

The fuel tank cap is located behind the fuel tank fill door on the driver's side of the vehicle. To open the fuel fill door, press and release the rear center edge of the door.

Turn the fuel tank cap counterclockwise to remove. Reinstall the cap by turning it clockwise until it clicks.

  • Fuel spills
  • Possible fuel fire

Be careful not to spill fuel. Wait a few seconds after you finish refueling before removing the nozzle. Clean fuel from painted surfaces as soon as possible. See Exterior Care.

Diesel fuel may foam when filling the tank. This may cause the fuel pump nozzle to shut off automatically, even if the tank is not full. If this happens, wait until the foaming stops, then fill the tank more slowly.

Accidental Gasoline Refueling

If the vehicle has been accidentally refueled with gasoline, do not continue to drive the vehicle except to reach a place where it can be stopped safely. Driving the vehicle will damage the fuel system. Have the vehicle towed to a qualified technician to have the gasoline removed from the tank and fuel system. Flush the fuel system with ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel to make sure all gasoline is removed.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)

GMC Terrain. Filling the Tank (Diesel)

DEF is a non-toxic solution that is sprayed into the exhaust stream of diesel vehicles to cause a chemical reaction that breaks down NOx emissions into harmless nitrogen and water.

DEF is not a fuel additive and never comes into contact with diesel fuel. It is stored in a separate tank. The DEF fill port is located behind the fuel fill door next to the fuel tank cap. It has a blue fill cap. See Diesel Exhaust Fluid.
