Cold Weather Operation (Diesel)
In cold weather, the fuel filter may become clogged with wax naturally present in the fuel. To clear it, park the vehicle in a warm garage area and allow the filter to warm up. The fuel filter may need to be replaced. Refer to Fuel Filter Replacement (Diesel).
At temperatures below 0 °C, it is recommended to avoid using biodiesel blends above 5%. These blends can cause damage to the fuel filter, clogging, gelling of the fuel system, and freezing, which may affect vehicle operation. It may be necessary to turn the ignition on and off several times before the vehicle starts. Also, let the engine idle for a couple of minutes before accelerating.
Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel No. 1-D fuel, or a blend of No. 1-D and No. 2-D diesel fuel, is recommended to improve vehicle performance in cold weather at temperatures below 0 °C. Using No. 1-D diesel fuel may reduce fuel economy. For additional information on improving cold weather operation, refer to Engine Heater 0 200.
