When to Change Engine Oil

This vehicle has a computer system that indicates when the engine oil and filter should be changed. This is based on a combination of factors that include engine revolutions, engine temperature, and distance driven. Depending on driving conditions, the distance at which an oil change is indicated may vary considerably. For the oil life system to work properly, the system must be reset each time the oil is changed.

When the system has calculated that oil life has diminished, it indicates that an oil change is required. CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON appears in the message center. Change the oil as soon as possible within the next 1000 km (600 miles). It is possible that under the best driving conditions, the oil life system may indicate that an oil change is not required for up to a year. The engine oil and filter must be changed at least once a year, and the system must be reset at that time. Your dealer has trained service personnel who will perform this work and reset the system. It is also important to check the oil regularly between oil change intervals and keep it at the proper level.

If the system is ever reset accidentally, the oil must be changed within 5000 km (3000 miles) of the last oil change. Be sure to reset the oil life system every time the oil is changed.

How to Reset the Engine Oil Life System

Reset the system whenever the engine oil is changed so that the system can calculate the next engine oil change. To reset the system:

  1. Display ENGINE OIL LIFE REMAINING in the DIC menu. Refer to Driver Information Center (DIC) (Base and Middle Level) or Driver Information Center (DIC) (Top Level).
  2. Press and hold V for several seconds while the oil life display is active to reset the Engine Oil Life System.
  3. ENGINE OIL LIFE REMAINING 100% will be displayed when the oil life system has been reset successfully.

The oil life system can also be reset using the following procedure:

  1. Turn the ignition to Service Mode. Refer to Ignition Positions.

Display ENGINE OIL LIFE in the DIC menu.

  2. See Driver Information Center (DIC) (Base and Middle Level) or Driver Information Center (DIC) (Top Level).
  3. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal three times within five seconds.
  4. If the display changes to 100%, the system has been reset.

If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message returns when the vehicle is started, the engine oil life system has not been reset. Repeat the procedure.
