Brake fluid

The brake master cylinder reservoir is filled with GM-approved DOT 3 brake fluid, as specified on the reservoir cap. See Engine Compartment Overview for reservoir location.
Checking Brake Fluid
When the vehicle is in P (Park) on a level surface, the brake fluid level should be between the MIN and MAX marks on the brake fluid reservoir.
There are only two reasons why the brake fluid level in the reservoir may drop:
- Normal brake pad wear. When new pads are installed, the fluid level returns to normal.
- Brake fluid leak in the hydraulic brake system. Have the brake hydraulic system repaired. If there is a leak, the brakes will not work properly.
Always clean the brake fluid reservoir cap and the area around the cap before removing it.
Do not add brake fluid to compensate for a leak. Adding fluid does not correct the leak. If fluid is added when the linings are worn, there will be too much fluid when new brake pads are installed. Add or remove fluid as necessary only when work is performed on the brake hydraulic system.
When the brake fluid level drops to the minimum level, the brake warning lamp illuminates. See Brake System Warning Light.
Brake fluid absorbs water over time, which reduces brake fluid effectiveness. Replace the brake fluid at the intervals specified to prevent increased stopping distance. See Maintenance Schedule.
What to Add
Use only GM-approved DOT 3 brake fluid from a clean, sealed container. See Recommended Fluids and Lubricants.
