Additional Safety Precautions
• Never hold a child on your lap. If you are not wearing a seat belt during a collision, the force of impact will throw you forward, and you may crush the child against the instrument panel or the front seatback. If you are wearing a seat belt during a collision, you will not be able to hold on to the child, who may be seriously injured or killed.
• Never share one seat belt between yourself and a child. In a collision, the seat belt may press forcefully on the child, resulting in serious or fatal injury.
• Never allow two children to share one seat belt at the same time. Otherwise, the children may be seriously injured in a collision.
• If a child can reach an unused seat belt, make sure it is fastened in the buckle and fully wound onto the locked retractor. If a child wraps a slack seat belt around the neck, it may cause a dangerous or even fatal injury. (For information on activating and deactivating the seat belt lock function, refer to pages 64 and 66.)
• Use the child safety door lock levers, which are not accessible to children.
If you lock the doors using this device, children will not be able to open the doors and accidentally fall out of the vehicle.
• WARNING: Use the master window switch to disable the power supply to the passenger window switches so that children cannot open the windows. Children will not be able to play by raising and lowering the windows, which could lead to an accident or distract the driver from monitoring the road situation. • WARNING: When leaving the vehicle with children or adult passengers remaining inside, always remove the key from the ignition switch and take it with you.
• Never leave children alone in the vehicle without adult supervision. In some countries, leaving children unattended in a vehicle is a violation of the law and may result in serious consequences.
For example, an infant or young child left unattended in a vehicle on a hot day may die from heatstroke.
If children are left unattended in the vehicle with the key in the ignition switch, they may accidentally start the engine.
The vehicle may move, which may result in injury to the children themselves and to others nearby.
• Lock all doors, including the liftgate, when the vehicle is not in use.
While playing, children may accidentally lock themselves inside the vehicle. Teach your children not to play in or near the vehicle.
• Keep vehicle keys and the remote door transmitter out of children's reach.
Even very young children know how to unlock the doors, start the ignition and open the liftgate. All of this may lead to an accident and even death.
Do not allow children to kneel on the seat or ride standing up. Inertial forces during sudden braking will throw the child forward. The child will be seriously injured and may even die.
