Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
To avoid damage, carefully disconnect the wiring connectors by holding the connector body.
Label all wires and hoses to avoid incorrect connection.
Turn the crankshaft pulley so that the No. 1 piston is at top dead center.
Removal of the timing chain cover is not required for this procedure.
Remove the cylinder head cover. (Refer to Cylinder Head Assembly - Cylinder Head Cover)
Remove the CVVT intermediate lock actuator (A).
Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC (top dead center) on the compression stroke.
Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the alignment mark on the timing chain cover.
Make sure the TDC marks on the intake and exhaust CVVT sprockets are in a straight line on the cylinder head surface, as shown in the illustration. Otherwise, rotate the crankshaft one full turn (360°) or more.
Mark the timing chains to match the alignment marks on the CVVT sprockets.
Remove the crankshaft damper pulley. (Refer to Timing System - "Crankshaft Damper Pulley")
Remove the service plug bolt (A) and gasket (B).
Remove the tensioner lever bolt (A).
Press the tensioner lever (A).
Remove the camshaft bearing caps.
First remove the exhaust camshaft (A), then the intake camshaft (B).
Remove the tensioner lever (A).
To hold the timing chain, secure it with a cable tie.
Remove the CVVT assembly (A) from the camshaft.
When removing the CVVT assembly bolt, hold the camshaft with a wrench to prevent it from rotating.
Inspection
Camshaft
Inspect the cam lobes. Using a micrometer, measure the cam lobe height. If the lobe height is less than specified, replace the camshaft.
Cam Lobe Height Intake: 39.0 mm (1.5354 in) Exhaust: 39.0 mm (1.5354 in)
Inspect the camshaft journal surfaces for wear. If a journal is excessively worn, replace the camshaft.
Inspect the camshaft journal oil clearance.
Clean the camshaft bearing caps and journals.
Install the camshafts on the cylinder head.
Place a strip of Plastigage on each camshaft journal.
Install the bearing caps and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Tightening torque: M6 bolts: 11.8 ~ 13.7 N·m M8 bolts: 18.6 ~ 23 N·m
Do not rotate the camshaft.
Remove the bearing caps.
Measure the Plastigage at its widest point. If the oil clearance is greater than specified, replace the camshaft. If necessary, replace the bearing caps and cylinder head as a set.
Using a dial indicator, measure the camshaft end play by moving the camshaft forward and backward. If the end play exceeds the specification, replace the camshaft. If necessary, replace the bearing caps and cylinder head as a set. Camshaft end play Standard: 0.10 – 0.19 mm (0.0039 – 0.0075 in.)
Remove the camshafts.
Inspect the CVVT for smooth rotation.
Clamp the camshaft in a vise. Be careful not to damage the cam lobes and journals in the vise.
Make sure the CVVT is locked by turning it clockwise or counterclockwise. It should not rotate.
Intake CVVT: Tape over one of the two advance holes in the camshaft journal. Exhaust CVVT: Tape over one of the two retard holes in the camshaft journal.
Intake CVVT:
Press the center of the valve bolt (A).
Apply approx. 50 kPa (0.5 kgf/cm², 7 psi) of compressed air to the lock pin release hole to release the lock.Exhaust CVVT: Apply approx. 150 kPa (1.5 kgf/cm², 21 psi) of compressed air to the unsealed brake hole to release the lock.
When applying compressed air, cover the oil passages with a cloth to prevent oil from splashing.
Intake CVVT: While applying compressed air, rotate the CVVT in the advance direction (counterclockwise) within its phase range, and make sure the CVVT rotates smoothly. Exhaust CVVT: While applying compressed air, rotate the CVVT in the retard direction (clockwise), and make sure the CVVT rotates smoothly. CVVT phase range — Intake: 40° (20° advance and 20° retard from the initial position). Exhaust: 20°±1° (from the most advanced position to the most retarded position).
Intake CVVT:
A.
Move to the center to make sure the lock pin closes properly.
B.
Rotate the CVVT to the most retarded position (clockwise), then make sure the CVVT is locked.
Exhaust CVVT:
A.
Rotate the CVVT to the most advanced position (counterclockwise), then make sure the CVVT is locked.
When installing the CVVT assembly bolt, hold the camshaft with a wrench to prevent it from rotating.
Compress the tensioner piston using the handle (A), then insert the stopper pin (B) into the hole in the tensioner to hold the compressed piston.
Position the intake camshaft (A), then insert the tensioner lever (B) along the timing chain.
Install the exhaust camshaft (A).
The timing marks of each CVVT sprocket must align with the timing mark (painted link) of the timing chain when installing the timing chain.
Install the camshaft bearing caps.Tighten the bolts in several passes in the specified sequence. Tightening torque — M6 bolts: 11.8 – 13.7 N·m; M8 bolts: 18.6 – 23 N·m
Be careful not to change the position or direction of the bearing caps.
Using a suitable tool, move the tensioner lever to align the tensioner bolt hole with the service hole.
Install the tensioner lever bolt (A).
Tightening Torque: 18.6 ~ 23 N·m
Remove the stopper pin from the tensioner.
Turn the crankshaft two revolutions in the normal direction of rotation (clockwise), then make sure the TDC marks of the CVVT sprockets align in a straight line with the cylinder head surface.
Install the service plug bolt (A) with a new gasket.
Tightening torque: 29.4 – 39 N·m
Do not reuse the service plug bolt and gasket.
Install the CVVT intermediate lock actuator (A).
Tightening torque: 8.8 ~ 9.8 N·m
Always use new actuator bolts.
Remove any debris from the bolt hole in the timing chain cover before locking.
Tighten the actuator bolts with a torque-angle (torque-controlled) method.
Install the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal.
