What to do in an emergency

Jump Starting the Vehicle Using Another Battery

~4min read

This procedure can be dangerous if not performed correctly.

Therefore, to avoid personal injury or damage, follow the correct procedure when jump starting the vehicle from another battery. If in doubt, it is strongly recommended that you contact a technician or a towing service to start the vehicle.

NOTICE Use only a 12-volt starting system. The 12-volt starter motor, ignition system and other electrical parts could be damaged beyond repair if a 24-volt power source (two 12-volt batteries in series or a 24-volt generator set) is used. WARNING - Battery Never try to check the battery electrolyte level, as this may cause the battery to rupture or explode and result in serious injury. WARNING - Battery - Keep flames and sparks away from the battery. The battery produces hydrogen which may explode if exposed to flames or sparks. - If these instructions are not followed exactly, there is a risk of serious personal injury and vehicle damage. If you are not sure how to follow the procedure, seek qualified assistance. Car batteries contain sulfuric acid. It is a poisonous substance and highly corrosive. When jump starting the vehicle from another battery, wear protective glasses and take care not to splash acid on yourself, your clothing or the vehicle. - Do not attempt this procedure if the discharged battery is frozen or if the electrolyte level is low. The battery could rupture or explode.

Jump Starting Procedure

NOTICE - AGM Battery (if equipped) - Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries are maintenance-free and must be serviced by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer. To charge an AGM battery, use only fully automatic battery chargers specifically designed for AGM batteries. - When replacing the AGM battery, it is recommended that you use parts from an authorized HYUNDAI dealer. - Do not open or remove the cover on the top of the battery. This may cause internal electrolyte leakage which could result in serious injury. - If the AGM battery is reconnected or replaced, the ISG function will not activate immediately. If you want to use the ISG function, the battery sensor must be calibrated for approximately 4 hours with the ignition on.

1. Make sure the battery is 12 volt and the negative terminal is grounded.

2. If the booster battery is in another vehicle, the two vehicles must not be in contact with each other.

3. Turn off all unnecessary electrical loads.

4. Connect the jumper cables in the sequence shown in the figure. First, connect one end of the cable to the positive terminal of the discharged battery (1), then connect the other end to the positive terminal of the booster battery (2).

Next, connect one end of the other cable to the negative terminal of the booster battery (3), then connect the other end to a solid, stationary metal point (for example, the engine bracket), away from the battery (4). Do not connect it on or near a part that moves when the engine is started.

Do not allow the jumper cables to contact objects other than the correct battery terminals or the ground point. Do not lean over the battery when making connections.

NOTICE - Battery Cables Do not connect the jumper cable from the negative terminal of the booster battery to the negative terminal of the discharged battery. This may cause the discharged battery to overheat or rupture, resulting in acid release.

5. Start the vehicle engine with the booster battery and let it run at 2,000 rpm, then start the vehicle with the discharged battery.

If the cause of the battery discharge is unclear, it is recommended that the system be checked by an authorised HYUNDAI dealer.
