Starting the Engine

~4min read

WARNING

  • Always wear appropriate footwear when driving the vehicle. Unsuitable footwear, such as high heels, ski boots, sandals, flip-flops, etc., may interfere with the operation of the brake, accelerator, and clutch pedals.
  • Do not start the vehicle with the accelerator pedal depressed. The vehicle may move unexpectedly and cause an accident.
  • Wait until the engine speed returns to normal. The vehicle may shift suddenly if you release the brake pedal while the engine speed is high.

Intelligent

  • The engine will start only when the Start/Stop button is pressed and the smart key is inside the vehicle.
  • Even if the Smart Key is inside the vehicle, the engine may not start if the Smart Key is too far from the driver.
  • When the Engine Start/Stop button is in the ACC or ON position, if any door is open, the system searches for the Smart Key. If the Smart Key is not inside the vehicle, "" flashes and the "Key Not In Vehicle" indicator illuminates. If all doors are closed, a warning chime also sounds for 5 seconds. The indicator will go off as soon as the vehicle starts moving. Keep the key inside the vehicle when using the ACC position or when the engine is running.

Starting the Gasoline Engine

For vehicles equipped with a manual transmission:

1. Always carry the Smart Key with you.

2. Make sure the parking brake is applied.

3. Make sure the gear shift lever is in the N (Neutral) position.

4. Depress the clutch pedal and the brake pedal.

5. Press the Engine Start/Stop button.

For vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission:

2. Make sure the parking brake is applied.

3. Make sure the shift lever is in P (Park).

4. Depress the brake pedal.

5. Press the Engine Start/Stop button.

Intelligent

  • Do not wait for the engine to warm up while the vehicle is stopped. Start driving at a moderate speed. (Avoid acceleration and sudden braking.)
  • Always start the vehicle with your foot on the brake pedal. Never start the vehicle with the accelerator pedal depressed. Do not race the engine while it is warming up.

Starting the Diesel Engine

To start the diesel engine when the engine is cold, the engine must be preheated before starting, and then warmed up before driving the vehicle.

For vehicles equipped with a manual transmission:

1. Always carry the Smart Key with you.

2. Make sure the parking brake is applied.

3. Make sure the gear shift lever is in the N (Neutral) position.

4. Depress the clutch pedal and the brake pedal.

Starting and Stopping a Turbocharged Engine

1. Start moving gently or accelerate gradually, without placing a heavy load on the engine immediately after starting it.
If the engine is cold, drive gently for a few seconds until the turbocharger is sufficiently lubricated.

2. After driving at high speed or after prolonged driving that places a heavy load on the engine, let the engine idle for about 1 minute before turning off the ignition. This idle time allows the turbocharger to cool down before the engine is stopped.

NOTICE

Do not turn off the engine immediately after it has been under load. This is important. Otherwise, you risk damaging or seriously damaging the turbocharger.

NOTICE

To avoid damage to the vehicle:

  • If the engine stalls while the vehicle is moving, do not attempt to shift the gear shift lever to the P (Park) position.
If traffic and road conditions allow, you may shift the gear shift lever to the N (Neutral) position while the vehicle is still moving, and press the Engine Start/Stop button to try to restart the engine.
  • Do not push or tow the vehicle to start the engine.

NOTICE

To avoid damage to the vehicle:

If the stop lamp fuse has blown, you will not be able to start the engine normally. Replace it with a new fuse. If this is not possible, you can start the engine by pressing and holding the Engine Start/Stop button for 10 seconds with the ignition in the ACC position.

Do not press the Engine Start/Stop button for more than 10 seconds unless the stop lamp fuse has blown.

For your safety, we recommend that you always depress the clutch pedal and the brake pedal when starting the engine.

Intelligent

If the Smart Key battery is low or the Smart Key is not operating properly, you can start the engine by pressing the Engine Start/Stop button with the Smart Key as shown in the illustration above.
