  13. Remove the ladder frame. (See Cylinder Block - Cylinder Block)
  14. Remove the piston and connecting rod assembly. (Refer to Cylinder Block Assembly - Piston and Connecting Rod.)
  15. Check the oil clearance of the main bearing.
  16. Remove the main bearing caps (A).
  17. Check the crankshaft end play.
  18. Lift the crankshaft (A) and carefully remove it from the engine so as not to damage the dowels.

Inspection

  1. Check the oil clearance of the crankshaft main bearings.
    1. To check the oil clearance between the main bearing and journal, remove the main bearings.
    2. Clean each main journal and bearing half with a clean cloth.
    3. Place a strip of Plastigage on each main journal.
    4. Install the bearings and bolts as follows, then tighten to the specified torque.

      Tightening torque: 17.7 - 22 N·m + 103 - 105°

    5. Remove the cap and bearing again, then measure the widest part of the Plastigage.

      Standard oil clearance: 0.006 - 0.024 mm (0.0002 - 0.0009 in.)

    6. If the Plastigage measurement is too large or too narrow, remove the upper bearing half, install a new bearing, select the bearing with the same color mark (select the color as shown in the following table), and check the clearance again.
    7. If the Plastigage measurement is still incorrect, try a larger or smaller bearing and check the clearance again. [The location of the bore marks for the crankshaft journals is on the cylinder block. The letters are stamped on the front face of the block as size marks for each of the 5 main journal bores. Use them, together with the numbers or stripes stamped on the crankshaft (main bearing size marks), to select the correct bearings.
The crankshaft journal bore identification is located on the cylinder block.

      II (2) D (Green) C (None) B (Black)
      III (3) C (None) B (Black) Blue)
  2. Check the crankshaft end play. Using a dial indicator, measure the end play by prying the crankshaft forward and backward with a screwdriver.

    Standard crankshaft end play: 0.07 - 0.25 mm (0.0028 - 0.0098 in.)

If the end play exceeds the maximum value, replace the thrust bearings as a set. Thrust bearing thickness: 1.925 - 1.965 mm (0.0757 - 0.0774 in.). Crankshaft end play: 0.07 - 0.25 mm (0.0028 - 0.0098 in.)
  3. Check the main journals and main bearing journals of the crankshaft. Using a micrometer, measure the diameter of each main journal and bearing journal. Main journal diameter: 42.942 - 42.960 mm (1.6906 - 1.6913 in.). Bearing journal diameter: 38.954 - 38.972 mm (1.5336 - 1.5343 in.)

Installation

  1. Install the crankshaft main bearings.
    1. Align the bearing tab with the tab groove of the cylinder block and press in the 4 upper bearings (A).
    2. Install the two thrust bearings (A) on either side of the No. 2 bearing position, with the oil grooves facing outward.
  2. Install the crankshaft (A) on the cylinder block.
  3. Install the main bearing cap (A).
    1. Install and tighten the 8 main bearing cap bolts in several passes, in the specified sequence.

      Tightening torque: 17.7 - 22 N·m + 103 - 105°

    2. Make sure the crankshaft rotates freely.
  4. Check the crankshaft end play.
  5. Install the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal.
