What to Do in an Emergency

Jump Starting

~3min read

If the vehicle still does not operate with the 12V battery (check that the headlights do not illuminate), the engine can be started by connecting jumper cables from a 12V power supply or from another vehicle to the battery terminals in the engine compartment. Follow the instructions below to jump start the 12V battery.

CAUTION

Jump starting can be dangerous if performed incorrectly. Follow the jump starting procedures described in this section to avoid serious injury or vehicle damage. If you are unsure how to jump start the vehicle correctly, we strongly recommend that a service technician or towing service do it for you.

1. Position the vehicles close enough for the jumper cables to reach, but do not allow the vehicles to touch.

2. Always keep clear of fans or any moving parts in the engine compartment, even when the vehicles are off.

3. Turn off all electrical devices such as the radio, lights, air conditioner, etc. Place both vehicles in P (Park) and apply the parking brake. Turn both vehicles OFF.

4. Connect the jumper cables in the exact sequence shown in the illustration. First, connect one jumper cable to the red positive (+) terminal of your vehicle (1).

5. Connect the other end of the jumper cable to the red positive (+) terminal of the booster battery of the assisting vehicle (2).

6. Connect the second jumper cable to the black negative (-) battery terminal or metal ground of the assisting vehicle (3).

7. Connect the other end of the second jumper cable to the black negative (-) ground point on the chassis of your vehicle (4).

Do not allow the jumper cables to contact anything other than the correct battery terminals or the correct ground. Do not lean over the battery during connection.

8. Press the 12V battery reset switch.

9. Start the engine of the assisting vehicle and let it run for several minutes.

10. Start the vehicle as soon as possible. After the vehicle starts ( Hyundai Ioniq. Jump Starting illuminates), drive the vehicle safely in an open area in standby-to-stop mode and/or drive it for 30 minutes to fully charge the 12V battery.

If your vehicle does not start after several attempts, it may require service. In this case, seek qualified assistance. If the cause of the battery discharge is not obvious, have your vehicle checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

Disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order of connection:

1. Disconnect the jumper cable from the black negative (-) ground point on the chassis of your vehicle (4).

2. Disconnect the other end of the jumper cable from the black negative (-) battery terminal or metal ground of the assisting vehicle (3).

3. Disconnect the second jumper cable from the red positive (+) terminal of the booster battery of the assisting vehicle (2).

4. Disconnect the other end of the jumper cable from the red positive (+) terminal of your vehicle (1).

Information

The charger voltage range must be 13.3 to 14 V, and its current range must be less than 60 A (13.8 V recommended).

CAUTION

  • Using an unsuitable charger with a voltage or current range higher than specified may cause overheating and damage to the 12V battery.
  • Using an unsuitable charger will cause the 12V battery power to be shut off for protection. Stop using the incorrect charger as soon as the vehicle power is turned off.

Information

An improperly disposed of battery can harm the environment and human health. Dispose of the battery in accordance with local laws or regulations.

NOTICE

To prevent damage to your vehicle:

  • Use only a 12-volt power source (battery or jumper system) to jump start your vehicle.
  • Do not attempt to start the vehicle by push-starting.
