What to Do in an Emergency

If the engine overheats

~2min read

If the engine coolant temperature gauge shows overheating, you experience a loss of power, or a loud knocking or pinging noise, the engine may be overheating. If this occurs, you should:

1. Turn on the hazard warning flashers, drive off the road and stop as soon as it is safe to do so.

2. Shift the shift lever to P (Park) and apply the parking brake.

3. Make sure no hot steam is coming from the engine compartment. When it is safe, open the engine compartment and disconnect the water pump connector. With the water pump connector disconnected, stop the engine, reconnect the water pump connector, and then restart the engine.

4. Set the temperature to maximum and the airflow to maximum, and turn on the air conditioner.

5. When the maintenance required warning light (Hyundai Ioniq. If the Engine Overheats) illuminates on the instrument cluster, stop the engine immediately and contact an authorized HYUNDAI dealer. When the engine warning light (Hyundai Ioniq. If the Engine Overheats) illuminates, or when coolant or hot steam escapes from the engine compartment, leave the engine compartment open with the engine running. This is to ventilate the engine compartment and to cool the engine.

6. Check the coolant temperature gauge on the instrument cluster to make sure the coolant temperature has dropped sufficiently. Check the coolant level. If it is low, check the connections to the radiator, heater hose and water pump for leaks. If there is no leak, add coolant. However, if problems persist, such as warning lights staying on, leaks, or a malfunctioning cooling fan that may cause the engine to overheat, stop the engine immediately and have the vehicle checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

WARNING

Hyundai Ioniq. If the Engine Overheats

The cooling fan motor may continue to run or start when the engine is off and may cause serious injury. Keep hands, clothing, and tools away from the rotating cooling fan blades.

WARNING

Hyundai Ioniq. If the Engine Overheats

Your vehicle is equipped with a pressurized coolant reservoir. NEVER remove the coolant reservoir cap or the radiator drain plug when the engine and radiator are HOT. Hot coolant and steam may be expelled under pressure, which can cause serious injury.

Turn off the engine and wait until the engine has cooled. Be extremely careful when removing the coolant reservoir cap. Wrap it with a towel or thick cloth and slowly turn it counterclockwise to release some pressure from the system. Step back until the pressure has been released.

When you are sure all pressure has been released, continue turning the cap counterclockwise to remove it.

7. If you cannot find the cause of the overheating, wait until the engine temperature returns to normal. Then, if coolant was lost, carefully add coolant to the reservoir until the fluid level reaches the middle mark.

8. Drive carefully, watching for further signs of overheating. If overheating occurs again, seek assistance from an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

CAUTION

A significant loss of coolant indicates a leak in the cooling system and should be checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.
