Trailer Towing Maintenance

~1min read

Your vehicle will require maintenance more often if you tow a trailer regularly. Important items to pay particular attention to include engine oil, dual clutch transmission fluid, axle lubricant, and cooling system fluid. Brake condition is another important item to check frequently. If you tow a trailer, it is recommended that you inspect these items before starting a trip. Do not forget to also maintain your trailer and hitch. Follow the maintenance schedule supplied with your trailer and check it periodically. It is preferable to perform an inspection at the start of each driving day. Most importantly, make sure all hitch nuts and bolts are tightened.

NOTICE

To avoid damage to the vehicle:

  • Due to the higher load while using a trailer, overheating may occur in hot weather or while driving uphill. If the coolant gauge indicates overheating, turn off the air conditioner and stop the vehicle in a safe place to cool the engine.
  • Do not turn off the engine while the coolant temperature gauge indicates overheating. (Keep the engine idling to cool the engine.)
  • When towing, check the dual clutch transmission fluid more frequently.
  • If your vehicle is not equipped with air conditioning, install a condenser fan to improve engine performance when towing a trailer.
