If You Decide to Tow a Trailer
The following are important points if you decide to tow a trailer:
- Consider using a trailer sway control system.
- Do not tow a trailer during the first 2000 km (1200 miles) of vehicle operation to allow proper break-in of the engine. Failure to observe this caution may result in serious engine or transmission damage.
- When towing a trailer, be sure to consult an authorized HYUNDAI dealer for additional information on additional requirements, such as a towing kit, etc.
- Always drive at a moderate speed (less than 100 km/h) or the specified towing speed limit.
- On long uphill grades, do not exceed a speed of 70 km/h or the specified towing speed limit, whichever is lower.
- Strictly observe the weight and load limits specified on the following pages.
Trailer Weight

What is the maximum safe trailer weight? It must never exceed the maximum trailer weight with trailer brakes. However, even this may be too heavy. It depends on how you plan to use your trailer. For example, speed, altitude, road grades, outside air temperature, and how often your vehicle is used for towing all matter. The ideal trailer weight may also depend on any special equipment you have on your vehicle.
Tongue Load

Tongue load is an important weight to measure, as it affects the total gross vehicle weight (GVW) of your vehicle. The trailer tongue should weigh no more than 10% of the total loaded trailer weight, within the maximum allowable tongue load.
After loading the trailer, weigh the trailer and the tongue separately to make sure the weights are correct. If they are not, you can correct them by simply moving some items within the trailer.
WARNING
Observe the following precautions:
- Never load a trailer so that it is heavier at the rear than at the front. The front should carry approximately 60% of the total trailer load; the rear should carry approximately 40% of the total trailer load.
- Never exceed the maximum trailer weight or the towing equipment capacity. Improper loading may damage your vehicle and/or personal belongings. Check weight and loading at a commercial scale or at a police station equipped with scales.
Information
Engine power decreases with increasing altitude. From 1000 m above sea level and every 1000 m thereafter, 10% of the vehicle/trailer weight (trailer tongue weight + gross vehicle weight) must be deducted.
