Repair Procedures
Removal
Loosen the wheel nuts slightly. Raise the vehicle and make sure it is securely supported.
Remove the rear wheel and tire (A) from the rear hub.
Tightening torque: 107.9–128 N·m
Be careful not to damage the hub bolts when removing the rear wheel and tire (A).
Remove the rear brake caliper. (Refer to Brake System - "Rear Disc Brake")
Loosen the drive shaft seal nut (A).
Tightening torque: 294.2–314 N·m
The driveshaft lock nut (A) must be replaced with new ones.
After installing the driveshaft lock nut, stake the lock nut with a chisel and hammer as shown in the illustration below.
Staking depth: 1.5 mm (0.591 in.)
Loosen the nut and bolt, then remove the rear upper arm (A) from the axle.
Tightening torque: 98.1 - 118 N·m
Loosen the bolt and nut, then separate the rear auxiliary arm (A) from the rear axle.
Tightening torque: 137.3–157 N·m
Loosen the bolt and nut, then separate the rear lower arm (A) from the rear axle.
Tightening torque: 137.3–157 N·m
Remove the propeller shaft (B) from the rear axle assembly (A).
Be careful not to damage the boot and dust cover.
Using a pry bar, remove the rear drive shaft from the differential. [Left][RH]
Use a pry bar carefully so as not to damage the differential and joint.
Do not insert the pry bar too deeply, as this may damage the oil seal.
Do not pull on the driveshaft with excessive force, as this may cause the components inside the joint assembly to shift, resulting in a torn boot or damaged bearing.
Plug the differential carrier opening with a cloth and cover it to prevent contamination.
Support the propeller shaft properly.
Replace the snap ring whenever the drive shaft is removed from the differential case.
Inspection
Inspect the drive shaft boots for damage and wear.
Inspect the ball joint for wear and damage.
Inspect the splines for wear and damage.
Inspect the drive shaft for cracks and wear.
Inspect the TJ outer race, inner race, cage, and balls for rust or damage.
Check the BJ boot for water, foreign material, or rust.
If the BJ assembly (A) will be reused, do not wipe off the grease.
Make sure there is no foreign material in the grease. If necessary, clean the BJ assembly (A) and replace the grease.
Disassembly
Do not disassemble the BJ.
Apply the specified grease to the driveshaft joint. Do not substitute grease of another type.
The boot must be replaced with a new one.
Remove the TJ boot clamps and pull the TJ boot off the TJ outer race.
Using pliers or a flat-tip (-) screwdriver, remove the LH boot band and LH TJ boot band from the propeller shaft.
Remove the RH boot band and RH TJ boot band in the same manner as the LH removal procedure.
Be careful not to damage the boot.
Pull the propeller shaft out of the TJ outer race.
Remove the snap ring (A), then remove the inner race (B), cage (C) and balls (D) as an assembly.
Clean the inner race, cage and balls without disassembling them.
Remove the BJ boot bands and pull off the TJ boot and BJ boot.
If the boot (A) will be reused, wrap tape (B) around the drive shaft splines (C) to protect the boot (A).
Installation
Wrap tape around the drive shaft splines (TJ side) to prevent damage to the boots.
Apply grease to the propeller shaft and install the boots.
Apply the specified grease to the inner race (A) and cage (B). Install the cage (B) so that it is offset from the track as shown in the illustration.
Use the grease included in the repair kit.
Apply the specified grease to the cage and install the balls into the cage.
Position the chamfered side (A) as shown in the illustration. Install the drive shaft inner race (B), then install the snap ring.
Apply the specified grease to the outer race and install the BJ outer race onto the propeller shaft.
Apply the specified grease to the TJ boot and install the boot with the clip.
Tighten the TJ boot bands.
Add the specified grease to the BJ as much as was wiped off during inspection.
Install the boots.
Tighten the BJ boot bands.
To control the air in the TJ boot, observe the specified distance between the boot bands when they are tightened.
