Electronic Power Steering (EPS)
The system reduces the effort required by the driver to steer the vehicle. If the engine is off or the electric power steering no longer operates, the vehicle can still be steered, but the required effort will be greater.
To ensure better steering control, the steering effort increases with vehicle speed and decreases as the vehicle slows down.
If you notice a change in steering effort, we recommend having your system checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
NOTICE
If the electric power steering system is not operating properly, the corresponding warning light (
) will illuminate on the instrument cluster. The steering wheel may become difficult to control. If necessary, have your vehicle's system checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
Information
The following symptoms may occur during normal vehicle operation:
- The steering may feel stiff immediately after the ignition is turned ON or the engine START/STOP button is set to ON.
This is caused by the EPS system self-diagnosis. Once the diagnosis is complete, the steering returns to normal operation. - You may hear a clicking sound from the EPS relay when the ignition is in the ON or LOCK/OFF position (without Smart Key system).
The EPS relay clicks when the engine START/STOP button is turned ON or OFF (with Smart Key system). - You may hear a motor noise when the vehicle is stationary or moving at low speed.
- When steering at low temperatures, you may need to apply greater effort to turn the wheel and you may hear an abnormal noise. This noise disappears as the temperature rises. This is completely normal.
- The steering becomes heavier if the steering wheel is turned continuously from left to right while the vehicle is stationary. This is not a malfunction. Normal operation will resume after a short time.
