Components and Component Location

COMPONENTS

1. Water Pump Pulley
2. Water Pump
3. Water pump seal

Repair Procedures

Removal and Installation

  1. Loosen the drain plug and drain the refrigerant from the engine. Remove the radiator cap to facilitate draining. Cooling should be done faster. (Refer to Cooling System – "Coolant".)
  2. Remove the drive belt. (Refer to Valve Timing System - "Drive Belt")
  3. Remove the water pump pulley (A).

    Tightening torque: 9.8–11.8 N·m

  4. Remove the water pump assembly (A) with the gasket (B).

    Tightening torque: 9.8–11.8 N·m

  5. To install, perform the removal procedure in reverse order.
  6. Refill the engine coolant. (Refer to Cooling System – "Coolant".)
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8. Recheck the coolant level.

Inspection

  1. Check for cracked, damaged, or worn parts and replace the water pump assembly if necessary.
  2. Make sure the bearing is not damaged, that it does not make abnormal noise, and that rotation is not slowed. Replace the water pump assembly if necessary.
  3. Check for coolant leaks. If coolant leaks from the hole, the seal is faulty. Replace the water pump assembly.

Troubleshooting

TROUBLESHOOTING

Symptoms POSSIBLE CAUSES REMEDY
Coolant Leakage
  • From the water pump drain hole
VISUAL INSPECTION
  • Check for leaks after approximately ten minutes of warm-up.
  • If the coolant continues to leak, replace the water pump.
  • If the leak stops, reuse the water pump (do not replace the pump with a new one).
  • From the gaskets or bolts
  • Check the tightening torque of the water pump mounting bolts.
  • Tighten the mounting bolts.
  • Check the seals for damage or dust contamination.
  • Replace the gasket and wipe off the dust.
  • From the outer surface of the water pump
  • Check the water pump for material defects or cracks.
  • Defective material. If you find a crack, replace the pump.
Noise
  • Seating
  • From the mechanical seals
  • Impeller interference
Monitor with a stethoscope
  • After starting the engine, check for noise with a stethoscope.
  • If there is no noise, reuse the water pump (do not replace it).
  • If the noise comes from the water pump, remove the drive belt and check again.
Inspection after drive belt removal
  • After removing the water pump and drive belt, check the noise again.
  • If there is noise, reuse the water pump. Check the other drive shaft components.
  • If there is no noise, reinstall the water pump with a new one.
Inspection after water pump removal
  • After removing the water pump and drive belt, check the noise again.
  • If there is no interference between them, replace the pump with a new one.
Overheated
  • Damaged impeller
  • Loose impeller
Loose impeller
  • Corrosion of impeller blade
  • Check the engine coolant.
  • Poor coolant quality / maintenance
  • Separation of impeller from shaft
  • Replace the water pump.
