Winter Precautions
Use high-quality glycol-based coolant.
Your vehicle uses high-quality ethylene glycol coolant. This is the only type of coolant that should be used, because it helps prevent corrosion in the cooling system, lubricates the water pump, and prevents freezing. Be sure to replace or renew the coolant according to the maintenance schedule in Section 7. Before winter, check the coolant to make sure its freezing point is appropriate for the temperatures expected in winter.
Check the Battery and Cables
Winter temperatures increase battery drain. Inspect the battery and cables in accordance with the procedure described in Chapter 7. A HYUNDAI dealer or authorized service center can check the battery charge level.
Use "winter" oil if necessary.
In some regions, it is recommended to use oil with lower viscosity in winter. For more information, refer to Chapter 8. If you are unsure of the type of "winter" oil, consult a HYUNDAI dealer.
Inspect Spark Plugs and Ignition System
Inspect the spark plugs in accordance with the procedure described in Chapter 7. Replace them if necessary. Also check all ignition cables and components for cracks, signs of wear, and possible damage.
To Prevent Door Locks from Freezing
To prevent door locks from freezing, spray an approved de-icer or glycerin into the locks. If a lock is already frozen, spray approved de-icer on the lock. If the inside of the lock is frozen, try to thaw it by inserting a heated key. Be careful when performing this operation to avoid burns.
Use approved windshield washer antifreeze.
To prevent the washer fluid from freezing, add a suitable antifreeze solution in accordance with the instructions on the washer fluid reservoir.
Most HYUNDAI dealers and repair shops offer windshield washer antifreeze solutions. Do not use engine coolant or other antifreeze solutions, as they may damage the vehicle's paint.
Protect the parking brake from freezing
Under certain conditions, the parking brake may become locked. This is more likely when snow or ice accumulates around the rear brakes or when the brakes are wet.
If the parking brake may freeze, apply it temporarily, then place the shift lever in P (Park). Also chock the rear wheels in advance. After that, the parking brake can be released.
Do not allow ice and snow to build up under the vehicle.
Under certain conditions, snow and ice can accumulate under the bumper and interfere with vehicle control. When driving in difficult winter conditions, regularly check the underside of the vehicle to make sure the drive wheels and steering components are not blocked.
Carry emergency equipment
Carry emergency equipment in your vehicle suitable for the weather conditions.
It is advisable to carry the following equipment: tire chains, straps or tow chains, flashlight, emergency warning device, sand, shovel, jumper cables, ice scraper, gloves, floor mat, work clothes, blanket, etc.
Do not leave foreign objects in the engine compartment.
Any foreign object that enters the engine compartment and, as a result, obstructs engine cooling may cause damage or fire. Such damage is not covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
