Occupant Classification System (OCS)

Your vehicle is equipped with an Occupant Classification System (OCS) in the front passenger seat.
Main Components of the Occupant Classification System
- Detection sensor located inside the front passenger seat cushion.
- The electronic system determines whether the front passenger airbag should be activated or deactivated.
- The indicator light located on the instrument panel with the words "PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF" shows that the front passenger airbag is deactivated.
- The airbag indicator light on the instrument panel is linked to the OCS.
The OCS is designed to detect the presence of a properly seated front passenger and determine whether the front passenger airbag should be enabled (ready to inflate if necessary) or not.
The purpose is to help reduce the risk of injury or death resulting from airbag deployment. Some front seat passengers, such as children, require the airbag to be automatically deactivated.
For example, if a child restraint system is installed on the seat, the Occupant Classification System can detect it and deactivate the front passenger airbag.
The front passenger seat for adult occupants who sit properly and wear the seat belt correctly should not cause the passenger airbag to turn off automatically. For small adults, it may turn off. However, if the occupant does not sit properly on the seat (for example, not sitting upright, sitting on the edge of the seat, or being out of position), the sensor may cause the front passenger airbag to be deactivated.
The "PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF" indicator can be found on the overhead console panel. This system detects one of the four conditions described in the following table and activates or deactivates the front passenger airbag based on these conditions.
Always make sure that you and all passengers are seated properly and wear seat belts correctly. The airbag and seat belt together provide the most effective protection.
Condition and Operation of the Front Passenger Classification System

*1: The system considers a person of adult size to be an adult. When a smaller adult sits in the front passenger seat, the system may recognize him/her as a child depending on his/her body build and posture.
*2: Do not allow children to ride in the front passenger seat. When a larger child who has outgrown the child restraint system sits in the front passenger seat, the system may recognize him/her as an adult depending on his/her body build or seated position.
*3: Never install a child restraint system on the front passenger seat.
*4: The "PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF" indicator may turn on or off when a child older than 12 months and up to 12 years (with or without a child restraint system) sits in the front passenger seat. This is a normal condition.
WARNING
Riding in an incorrect position or placing a load on the front passenger seat when it is not occupied adversely affects the OCS. To reduce the risk of serious injury or death:

- Never place heavy objects on the front seat cushion or seatback, or in the seat pocket, or hang any items on the front passenger seat.

- Never place your feet on the front passenger seatback.

- Never sit with your hips forward on the seat.

- Never ride with the seatback reclined while the vehicle is moving.

- Never put your feet on the instrument panel.

- Never lean on or sit on the door or center console on the front passenger side.
.png)
- Do not sit on the passenger seat in heavy or bulky clothing such as ski wear and hip protectors.
.png)
- Do not use seat accessories, such as thick blankets and cushions, that cover the surface of the seat.
.png)
- Do not place electronic devices, such as laptops, DVD players, or conductive materials, such as water bottles, on the front passenger seat.
- Do not use electronic devices, such as laptops and satellite radios, that use inverter chargers while seated in the front passenger seat.

- Make sure the seat is completely dry before driving the vehicle. If a large amount of liquid has spilled on the front passenger seat, the airbag warning light may illuminate or malfunction.
- Do not place sharp objects on the front passenger seat. They may damage the occupant detection system if they puncture the seat cushion.
- Do not place any objects under the front passenger seat.
- When changing or replacing a seat or seat cover, use only genuine parts. The OCS was designed based on the use of only genuine HYUNDAI seats. Modifying or replacing original parts may cause system malfunction and increase the risk of injury in a collision. Any of the above may interfere with proper operation of the OCS sensor, thereby increasing the risk of injury in an accident.
Correct Sitting Position for the OCS
.png)
If the "PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF" indicator remains on when an adult is seated in the front passenger seat, turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and ask the passenger to sit properly (upright with the seatback in the vertical position, centered on the seat cushion, seat belt fastened, legs comfortably extended, and feet on the floor). Restart the engine and ask the person to remain in this position. This allows the occupant detection system to enable the passenger airbag. If the "PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF" indicator is still on, ask the passenger to move to the rear seat.
WARNING
Never allow an adult passenger to sit in the front passenger seat when the "PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF" indicator is illuminated. In a collision, the airbag will not deploy if the indicator is lit. If the indicator is lit while an adult is seated in the front passenger seat, follow the instructions in the previous paragraph to reposition the passenger on the seat.
If the "PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF" indicator stays on after the passenger is seated correctly, seat the passenger in a rear seat of the vehicle instead.
Information
The "PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF" indicator normally illuminates for approximately 4 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the ON or START position. However, if the ignition switch is in the ON or START position within 3 minutes after the engine is turned off, the indicator will not illuminate. If the front passenger seat is occupied, the OCS classifies the front passenger after a few seconds.
