The SRS consists of advanced airbags located in the center of the steering wheel and on the front passenger side trim panel above the glove box.

The airbag locations are marked with the embossed word "AIRBAG".

The purpose of the SRS is to provide the driver and front passenger with supplemental protection that the seat belt system does not provide in a severe frontal collision.

The SRS uses sensors to collect information about the severity of the impact and the use of the driver's and front passenger's seat belts.

Seat belt buckle sensors determine whether the driver's and front passenger's seat belts are fastened. These sensors allow the SRS deployment to be controlled depending on whether the seat belts are fastened and how severe the impact is.

The SRS offers the ability to control airbag deployment in two stages. The first stage is intended for moderate impacts. The second stage is intended for more severe impacts.

Based on impact severity and seat belt use, the SRS control module (SRSCM) controls airbag deployment. Improper seat belt use may increase the risk or severity of injury in a collision.

WARNING

To reduce the risk of serious injury or death from front airbag deployment:

  • Seat belts must always be worn to help occupants maintain the correct position.
  • Move your seat as far back from the front airbags as possible while maintaining control of the vehicle.
  • Never lean against the door or center console.
  • Hold the steering wheel at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions to minimize the risk of injury to the hands and arms.
  • Do not allow the front passenger to place feet or legs on the instrument panel.
  • Never place any objects (such as a dashboard cover, cell phone holder, cup holder, air freshener, or stickers) over or near the airbag modules in the steering wheel, instrument panel, windshield, and front passenger panel above the glove box. Such objects may cause injury if the vehicle is in a collision severe enough to deploy the airbags.
  • Do not attach any objects to the front windshield or the interior rearview mirror.
