What to Expect After an Airbag Inflates

~1min read

After a front or side airbag deploys, it deflates very quickly. Airbag inflation does not prevent the driver from seeing through the windshield or from being able to steer. Curtain airbags may remain partially inflated for some time after they deploy.

WARNING

After an airbag deploys, take the following precautions:

  • Open windows and doors as soon as possible after the collision to reduce prolonged exposure to the powder released when the airbag deploys.
  • Do not touch the airbag storage area or internal components immediately after airbag deployment. Parts in contact with the inflated airbag may be very hot.
  • Always wash exposed skin thoroughly with cold water and mild soap.
  • Have an authorized HYUNDAI dealer inspect the vehicle and replace components as required before driving the vehicle again. Airbags are designed for one-time use only.

Noise and Powder from Airbag Inflation

When airbags deploy, they make a loud noise and may release powder inside the vehicle. After an airbag inflates, you may feel discomfort while breathing. This may be caused by contact with the airbag or seat belt against your chest, and it may also be caused by inhaling residual powder in the air in and around your vehicle. The powder may aggravate asthma in some people. If you experience breathing difficulties after airbag deployment, seek medical attention immediately.

Although the powder is non-toxic, it may cause irritation of the skin, eyes, nose, throat, etc. If this occurs, rinse immediately with cold water and seek medical attention if symptoms persist.
