Driver and Front Passenger Front Airbag Features
The advanced front airbag system has multi-stage driver and front passenger airbags. This system provides output appropriate to the severity and type of collision as determined by the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC), which may receive information from frontal impact sensors (if equipped) or other system components.
The first-stage inflator fires immediately during an impact requiring airbag deployment. Low output is used in less severe collisions. Higher output is used for more severe collisions.
This vehicle may be equipped with a driver and/or front passenger seat belt buckle switch, which determines whether the driver or front passenger seat belt is fastened. The seat belt buckle switch may adjust the inflation level of the advanced front airbags.
This vehicle may be equipped with driver and/or front passenger seat track position sensors, which may adjust the inflation level of the advanced front airbags depending on seat position.
This vehicle is equipped with an Occupant Classification System (OCS) in the front passenger seat. The OCS is designed to activate or deactivate the passenger advanced front airbag depending on the weight of the seated occupant. It is designed to deactivate the passenger advanced front airbag for an unoccupied seat and for occupants whose seated weight places them in a category other than an properly seated adult. This may be a child, a teenager, or even a small adult.
The Passenger Air Bag Disable (PAD) indicator light (an amber light located on the overhead console) informs the driver and front passenger when the Advanced Front Passenger Air Bag is deactivated. The PAD indicator light illuminates with the words "PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF" to show that the Advanced Front Passenger Air Bag will not deploy in a collision.
NOTE:
If the front passenger seat is unoccupied or when very light objects are placed on the seat, the Advanced Front Passenger Air Bag will not deploy, even if the Passenger Air Bag Disable (PAD) indicator light is NOT illuminated.
- Do not place any objects on or around the instrument panel air bag or steering wheel. Any such objects may cause injury if the vehicle is involved in a collision severe enough to deploy the air bag.
- Do not place anything on or around the air bag cover, or attempt to open it manually. You may damage the air bag and may be injured because the air bag may no longer function. The air bag cover is designed to open only when the air bag inflates.
- Relying on air bags alone may result in more severe injuries in a collision. Air bags work together with your seat belt to restrain you properly. In some collisions, air bags will not deploy at all. Always wear your seat belt, even if you have air bags.
