Installing Child Restraints Using the Vehicle Seat Belt
Child restraints are designed to be secured to vehicle seats with lap belts or the lap portion of a lap/shoulder seat belt.
- Incorrect installation or improperly secured child restraints may result in failure of the restraint. The child may be seriously injured or killed.
- Follow the child restraint manufacturer's instructions precisely when installing an infant or child restraint.
The front passenger seat belts are equipped with a switchable Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR), which is designed to hold the lap portion of the seat belt tightly around the child restraint so that a locking clip is not required. The ALR retractor can be "switched" to the locked mode by pulling the entire webbing out of the retractor and then allowing the webbing to retract back into the retractor. When locked, the ALR will click as the belt is retracted into the retractor.
Refer to "Automatic Locking Mode" in the "Switchable Automatic Locking Retractors (ALR)" section for additional information on the ALR.
