Rear Parking Distance Warning (PDW)
.jpg)
The Rear Parking Distance Warning assists the driver when backing up the vehicle by sounding a warning if any object is detected within 48 inches (120 cm) behind the vehicle.
This system is a supplemental system and is not intended to replace the need for extreme caution and driver attention. The sensing range and objects detected by the rear ultrasonic sensors are limited. When backing up, pay as much attention to what is behind you as you would in a vehicle without the Rear Parking Distance Warning.
WARNING - Rear Parking Distance Warning
Never rely solely on the Rear Parking Distance Warning. Always perform a visual inspection to make sure the vehicle is clear of all obstacles before moving the vehicle in any direction. Stop immediately if you know a child is near your vehicle. Some objects may not be detected by the sensors due to the object's size or material.
Rear Parking Distance Warning Operation
Operating Condition
- This system is activated when backing up with the ENGINE START/STOP button on. If the vehicle is moving faster than 5 km/h, the system may not activate.
- The detection distance of the rear warning system is approximately 48 inches (120 cm) at the center of the rear bumper area and 24 inches (60 cm) at the sides of the rear bumper.
- When more than two objects are detected at the same time, the nearest one will be recognized first.
Types of Warning Sounds
- When an object is detected between 24 and 48 inches (60 cm to 120 cm) behind the bumper: the buzzer sounds intermittently.
- When an object is detected between 12 and 24 inches (30 cm to 60 cm) behind the bumper: the buzzer sounds more frequently.
- When an object is within 16 inches (40 cm) of the rear bumper: the buzzer sounds continuously.
Conditions Affecting Rear Parking Distance Warning Operation
The Rear Parking Distance Warning may not operate properly when:
1. Moisture has frozen on the sensor. (It will operate normally once the moisture is cleared.)
2. The sensor is covered with foreign substances such as snow or water, or the sensor cover is blocked. (It will operate normally once the material is removed or the sensor is no longer blocked.)
3. Driving on uneven road surfaces (dirt roads, gravel, bumps, slopes).
4. Objects creating excessive noise (car horns, loud motorcycle engines or air brakes of trucks) are within the sensor range.
5. Heavy rain or water spray.
6. Wireless transmitters or mobile phones are within the sensor range.
7. The sensor is buried in snow.
8. Towing a trailer
The detection range may decrease when:
1. The sensor is covered with foreign substances such as snow or water. (The sensing range will return to normal after removal.)
2. The outside air temperature is very hot or cold.
The following objects may not be detected by the sensor:
1. Sharp or thin objects such as ropes, chains, or small poles.
2. Objects that can absorb the sensor frequency, such as clothing, sound-absorbing material, or snow.
3. Undetectable objects less than 40 inches (100 cm) in height and with a diameter less than 6 inches (14 cm).
Rear Parking Distance Warning Precautions
- The Rear Parking Distance Warning may sound inconsistently depending on the speed and shape of detected objects.
- The Rear Parking Distance Warning may malfunction if the vehicle bumper height or sensor installation has been changed or damaged. Any non-factory installed equipment or accessories may also interfere with sensor operation.
- The sensor may not recognize objects less than 16 inches (40 cm) from the sensor, or it may detect an incorrect distance. Use caution.
- When the sensor is frozen or covered with snow, dirt, or water, the sensor may not operate until the material is removed with a soft cloth.
- To avoid damage, do not press, scratch, or strike the sensor.
✽ NOTICE
This system can only detect objects within the range and location of the sensors. It cannot detect objects in other areas where sensors are not installed. In addition, small or thin objects, such as poles or objects located between the sensors, may not be detected by the sensors.
Always visually check behind the vehicle when driving in reverse.
Be sure to inform drivers of vehicles that may be unfamiliar with the system about the system's capabilities and limitations.
Self-Diagnosis
If you do not hear the warning sound, or if the buzzer sounds intermittently when shifting into the R (Reverse) position, this may indicate a malfunction in the rear Parking Distance Warning system. If this occurs, have your vehicle inspected by an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible.
✽ NOTICE
The new vehicle warranty does not cover any accidents or damage to the vehicle or injury to its passengers due to a malfunction of the Parking Distance Warning system in reverse. Always drive safely and carefully.
