Replacement

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery and wait at least 30 seconds.
  2. Turn the steering wheel so that the front wheels point straight ahead.
  3. Press the pin (A) and disconnect the airbag module from the steering wheel.
  4. Disconnect the airbag module connector (A) and horn connector (B), then remove the airbag module from the steering wheel.
  5. Disconnect the lock nut (A) and connector (B), then remove the steering wheel using the special service tool. (09561-11001)

    Tightening torque: 39.2 ~ 44 N·m

Do not strike the steering wheel to remove it; this may damage the steering column.
  6. Loosen the screw and remove the upper (A) and lower steering column covers (B).
  7. Disconnect the connector (A) and remove the clock spring (B).
    • When installing, set the center position by aligning the marks between the clock spring and the cover. Make sure the mark (▶◀) is aligned, then turn the clock spring clockwise until it stops, and then turn it 2.0 turns counterclockwise.
  8. Disconnect the connector (A).
  9. Loosen the screw and remove the multifunction switches (A).
  10. Remove the side airbag cover, fuse block cover, and lower airbag. (Refer to Body - "Lower Crash Pad Panel")
  11. Loosen the screw and remove the steering column tilt (A).
  12. Loosen the bolt (A), then disconnect the universal joint assembly from the pinion gear.

    Tightening torque: 32.4 ~ 37 N·m

    • Lock the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position to prevent damage to the inner cable of the clock spring when handling the steering wheel.
    • Do not reuse the bolt.
  13. Disconnect all connectors between the steering column and the EPS unit.
  14. Remove the steering column and EPS unit by loosening the mounting bolt (A) and nuts (B). Tightening torque: Nut: 12.7 ~ 17.7 N·m Bolt: 44.1 ~ 49 N·m
If the type is MDPS, you must perform EPS type recognition (Refer to Electric Power Steering - Repair Procedures).
  15. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Universal Joint Assembly

  1. Loosen the bolt (A) and then disconnect the universal joint assembly from the steering column assembly.

    Tightening Torque: 49.0 ~ 59 N·m

  2. Assembly is the reverse of disassembly.
    • Do not separate the EPS module from the column shaft.

Inspection

  1. Inspect the steering column for damage and deformation.
  2. Inspect the steering column for damage and deformation.
  3. Inspect the joint bearing for damage and wear.
  4. Inspect the tilt bracket for damage and cracks.
  5. Check the key lock operation and replace it if necessary.
