Steering Wheel
Electric Power Steering (EPS)
The power steering system uses the engine to assist in steering the vehicle. If the engine is off or if the hydraulic power steering system becomes inoperative, the vehicle can still be steered, but it will require increased effort on the steering wheel.
The electric power steering is controlled by the power steering control unit, which responds to steering wheel torque and vehicle speed to control the motor.
The steering wheel becomes heavier as vehicle speed increases and becomes lighter as vehicle speed decreases, for better control of the steering wheel.
If you notice any change in the steering effort required during normal vehicle operation, have the power steering system inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.
✽ NOTICE
The following symptoms may occur during normal vehicle operation:
- The steering effort increases immediately after the ignition is switched on. This occurs while the system performs the EPS system diagnosis. When the diagnosis is complete, the steering wheel will return to normal.
- A clicking sound may be heard from the EPS relay after the ignition switch is turned to the ON or OFF position.
- A motor noise may be heard when the vehicle is stationary or traveling at low speed.
- The steering effort increases if the steering wheel is turned continuously while the vehicle is not moving. However, after a few minutes, it will return to its normal condition.
- A noise may occur when operating the steering wheel at low temperatures. If the temperature rises, the noise will most likely disappear. This is a normal condition.
- When the charging system warning light illuminates or the battery voltage is low (when the alternator or battery is not operating normally), the steering wheel may become heavy and difficult to control, or operate abnormally.
If the Electric Power Steering (EPS) system is not operating normally, the warning light will illuminate on the instrument cluster. The steering wheel may require increased steering effort. Take your vehicle to an authorized Kia dealer and have the vehicle inspected as soon as possible.
