Active Air Flap (AAF) Description and Operation

~1min read

Description

The AAF (Active Air Flap) is located between the radiator grille and the radiator, and consists of an actuator and 6 air flaps. The system receives information from EMS, FATC, TCU, MCU and LDC via CAN communication. Using this information, the AAF controls the air flaps. When properly operated, the air flaps regulate the airflow through the radiator grille. During high-speed driving, this reduces air resistance by closing the air flaps. This improves fuel efficiency and increases driving stability. If overheating occurs, the system opens the air flaps to lower the temperature. While the air conditioner is operating, the system opens the air flaps to maintain refrigerant pressure. The system closes the air flaps to warm up the engine quickly during a cold start.
