Removal

Balance Shaft Module (BSM) Chain System
  1. Remove the timing chain. (Refer to Timing System in this group)
  2. Install the stopper pin (A) after compressing the balance shaft chain tensioner.
  3. Remove the balance shaft chain hydraulic tensioner (B).
  4. Remove the balance shaft chain tensioner arm (C).
  5. Remove the balance shaft chain guide (D).
  6. Remove the balance shaft chain (E).
  7. Remove the balance shaft module (BSM) (A) after loosening the balance shaft module (BSM) mounting bolts.
Do not disassemble the balance shaft module (BSM).
  8. Remove the engine room cover.
  9. Remove the right front wheel.
  10. Drain the engine oil.
  11. Remove the air conditioner compressor bracket (A).
  12. Remove the oil pan (A). Insert the blade of the SST (09215-3C000) between the ladder frame and the oil pan. Cut the applied sealant and remove the lower oil pan.
    • Insert the SST between the oil pan and the ladder frame, tapping it with a plastic hammer in the directionarrow.
    • After tapping the SST with a plastic hammer in the direction of theof the arrow around more than 2/3 of the edge of the oil pan, then remove it from the ladder frame.
    • Do not pry the SST sharply without tapping. This will damage the SST.
    • Be careful not to damage the mating surfaces of the ladder frame and the lower oil pan.
  13. Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression.
    1. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the alignment mark on the timing chain cover.
    2. Make sure the sprocket alignment mark (A) is visually aligned with the center of the adjacent cast tooth groove (B), and the drive shaft timing mark (C) is visually aligned with the timing mark on the housing (D).
  14. Mark the timing chain (A) to match the mark (B) on the sprocket.
  15. Insert the stopper pin (A) into the hole in the tensioner after compressing the balance shaft chain tensioner piston.
  16. Remove the balance shaft module (BSM) mounting bolts (A).
  17. Remove the balance shaft module (BSM) (A) while removing the chain from the sprocket.
Do not disassemble the balance shaft module (BSM).

Installation

Balance Shaft Module (BSM) Chain System
  1. The crankshaft key must be aligned with the mating surface of the main bearing cap. As a result, the No. 1 cylinder piston is at top dead center on the compression stroke.
  2. Insert the stopper pin (A) into the balance shaft module (BSM) to hold the sprocket in its original position, with the alignment marks (B, D) aligned with the timing marks (C, E).
The new balance shaft module (BSM) is already installed with the stopper pin in its original position.
  3. Install the balance shaft module (BSM).
    1. Tighten the bolts to the specified torque of 26 N·m, then loosen the bolts.
    2. Using the SST (angle gauge adapter, 09221-4A000), tighten the bolts to the specified torque and angle. Tightening torque Bolts (A) (M9x181.5): 22.6 ~ 26 N·m + 88° ~ 92° Bolts (B) (M9x100): 22.6 ~ 26 N·m + 43° ~ 47°
Do not reuse the balance shaft module (BSM) bolts.
  4. Install the balance shaft chain (E).
The timing mark on the balance shaft module (BSM) sprocket and the crankshaft sprocket must align with the timing mark (colored link) on the balance shaft chain.
  5. Install the balance shaft chain guide (D).

    Tightening torque: 9.8 ~ 11.8 N·m

  6. Install the balance shaft chain hydraulic tensioner (B), then remove the stopper pin (A).

    Tightening torque: 9.8 ~ 11.8 N·m

  7. Install the balance shaft chain tensioner lever (C).

    Tightening torque: 9.8 ~ 11.8 N·m

  8. Remove the stopper pin (A) from the balance shaft module (BSM).
  9. After turning the crankshaft 2 revolutions in the normal direction (clockwise when viewed from the front), make sure the timing mark and notch are aligned with the original position.
  10. Install the timing chain. (Refer to Timing System in this group)
  11. Insert the stopper pin (A) into the balance shaft module (BSM) to hold the sprocket in its original position, with the alignment marks (B, D) aligned with the timing marks (C, E).
  12. Install the balance shaft module (BSM) (A).
The timing mark on the balance shaft module (BSM) sprocket (A) must align with the painted link (B) of the timing chain.
  13. Install the balance shaft module (BSM). Mounting bolts.
  14. Remove the stopper pin (A) from the balance shaft module (BSM).
  15. Remove the stopper pin (A) from the tensioner.
  16. Check the timing mark of the balance shaft module (BSM).
  17. Install the oil pan.
    1. Using a gasket scraper, remove all old sealant from the gasket surfaces.
    2. Before assembling the oil pan, apply Loctite 5900H liquid gasket or Threebond 1217H or equivalent to the oil pan. Assemble the parts within 5 minutes after applying the sealant.

Bead width: 2.5 mm (0.10 in)

      • When applying sealant, make sure the sealant does not protrude into the oil pan.
      • To prevent oil leakage, apply sealant to the internal threads of the bolt holes.
    3. Install the oil pan (A). Tighten the bolts evenly in several passes.
    Tightening torque Bolts B (M9): 26.5 ~ 30 N·m Bolts C (M6): 9.8 ~ 11.8 N·m
    • After assembly, wait at least 30 minutes before adding engine oil.
    • Always use a new drain plug gasket.
  18. Install the air conditioning compressor bracket (A). Torque: Bolts (B): 19.6 - 24 N·m Bolts (C): 20.0 - 33 N·m
  19. Fill the engine oil.
  20. Install the right front wheel.
  21. Install the engine compartment cover.
