Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Each tire, including the spare (if equipped), should be checked monthly when cold and inflated to the tire pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer on the vehicle placard or tire pressure label.

(If your vehicle is equipped with tires of a different size than the size indicated on the vehicle certification label or tire inflation pressure label, you must determine the correct tire inflation pressure for those tires.)

As an additional safety measure, your vehicle is equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that illuminates the low tire pressure warning light when one or more of your tires is significantly under-inflated.

Accordingly, when the low tire pressure warning light illuminates, you should stop as soon as possible and check your tires and inflate them to the proper pressure. Driving on a significantly under-inflated tire causes the tire to overheat and can lead to tire failure. Under-inflation also reduces fuel efficiency and tire tread life and may affect the vehicle's handling and braking ability.

Note that the TPMS does not replace proper tire maintenance. The driver is responsible for maintaining correct tire pressure, even if pressure has not dropped to the level that illuminates the TPMS low tire pressure warning light.

Your vehicle also has a TPMS malfunction indicator to indicate when the system is not operating properly. The TPMS malfunction indicator is combined with the low tire pressure warning light.

When the system detects a malfunction, the warning light will flash for approximately one minute and then remain continuously illuminated. This sequence will continue upon subsequent vehicle start-ups as long as the malfunction exists. When the malfunction indicator is illuminated, the system may not be able to detect or signal low tire pressure as intended.

TPMS malfunctions may occur for a variety of reasons, including the installation of replacement or alternate tires or wheels on the vehicle that prevent the TPMS from functioning properly.

Always check the TPMS malfunction indicator after replacing one or more tires or wheels on your vehicle to ensure that the replacement tires and wheels allow the TPMS to continue to function properly.

✽ NOTICE

If the TPMS low tire pressure warning light does not illuminate for approximately 3 seconds when the ignition switch is turned to the ON position or the engine is started, or if it remains illuminated after starting for approximately 3 seconds, take your vehicle to the nearest authorized Kia dealer and have the system checked.

Low Tire Pressure Warning Light

When the tire pressure monitoring system warning indicators are illuminated,

When the tire pressure monitoring system warning light illuminates, the pressure in one or more tires is significantly below the specified value.

If the warning light illuminates, reduce speed immediately, avoid sharp turns and braking maneuvers, and anticipate increased braking distance. You should stop and check your tires as soon as possible.

Inflate the tires to the proper pressure indicated on the vehicle certification label or tire inflation pressure label located on the inside of the driver's side center pillar. If you cannot reach a service station or if the tire does not hold the newly added air, replace the low-pressure tire with the spare tire.

The TPMS malfunction indicator and low tire pressure warning light may change and illuminate after restarting and after approximately 20 minutes of continuous driving until you repair or replace the low tire on the vehicle.

CAUTION

In winter or cold weather, the low tire pressure warning light may illuminate if tire pressure was adjusted to the recommended tire pressure in warm weather. This does not mean the TPMS is malfunctioning, as the drop in temperature causes a proportional drop in tire pressure. When you drive your vehicle from a warm region to a cold region, or from a cold region to a warm region, or when the outside temperature changes significantly, check the tire pressure and adjust the tires to the recommended tire pressure.

WARNING! Low Tire Pressure Damage

Significantly under-inflated tires make the vehicle unstable and can contribute to loss of vehicle control and increased braking distance. Continued driving on under-inflated tires can cause tire overheating and failure.

TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) Malfunction Indicator

The low tire pressure telltale will illuminate after it blinks for approximately

The low tire pressure warning light will illuminate after flashing for approximately one minute when there is a problem with the TPMS. If the system is able to correctly detect a low tire pressure condition and a system malfunction at the same time, both the TPMS malfunction indicator and the low tire pressure warning light will illuminate. For example, if the front left sensor is not functioning, the TPMS malfunction indicator will illuminate, but if the front right, rear left, or rear right tire is under-inflated, the low tire pressure warning light may illuminate simultaneously with the TPMS malfunction indicator.

Have the system checked by an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible to determine the cause of the problem.

CAUTION

  • The TPMS malfunction indicator may illuminate while driving near power cables or radio transmitters, such as police stations, government and public facilities, broadcasting stations, military facilities, airports, or transmission towers, etc. This may interfere with normal operation of the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).
  • The TPMS malfunction indicator may illuminate if snow chains are used or if certain electronic devices, such as a laptop computer, mobile phone charger, remote starter, or navigation system, are used in the vehicle. This may interfere with normal operation of the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).
