Tire Replacement

~3min read
If the tire is worn evenly, a tread wear indicator will appear as a solid band

If a tire is worn evenly, the tread wear indicator will appear as a solid band across the tread. This shows that less than 1/16 in (1.6 mm) of tread depth remains on the tire. In this case, replace the tire.

Do not wait until the band appears across the entire tread before replacing the tire.

WARNING! Tire Replacement

To reduce the possibility of serious or fatal injury from an accident caused by tire failure or loss of vehicle control:

  • Replace worn, unevenly worn, or damaged tires. Worn tires may result in reduced braking, steering, and traction performance.
  • Do not drive the vehicle with tire pressure that is too low or too high. This may cause uneven wear and tire failure.
  • When replacing tires, never fit radial and bias-ply tires on the same vehicle. You must replace all tires (including the spare) when changing from radial to bias-ply tires.
  • Using tires and wheels of sizes different from the recommended sizes may cause unusual handling characteristics and poor vehicle control, resulting in a serious accident.
  • Wheels that do not meet Kia specifications may not fit properly and may cause damage to the vehicle or unusual handling and poor vehicle control.
  • ABS operates by comparing wheel speeds. Tire size affects wheel speed. When replacing tires, all four tires must be the same size as originally supplied with the vehicle. Using tires of a different size may cause the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and ESC (Electronic Stability Control) to operate incorrectly.

Compact Spare Tire Replacement

The compact spare tire has a shorter service life than a full-size tire.

Replace it when the tread wear indicator bars appear on the tire.

A replacement compact spare tire must be the same size and design as the one supplied with your new vehicle and must be installed on the same compact spare wheel. The compact spare tire is not designed for installation on a full-size wheel, and the compact spare wheel is not designed for a full-size tire.

Wheel Replacement

When replacing metal wheels for any reason, make sure the new wheels are equivalent to the original factory wheels in diameter, rim width, and offset.

WARNING

An incorrect wheel size may adversely affect wheel and bearing life, brake performance, handling, ground clearance, tire-to-body clearance, snow chain clearance, speedometer and odometer calibration, headlight aim, and bumper height.

Tire Traction

Traction may be reduced if you drive on worn tires, improperly inflated tires, or slippery road surfaces. Replace tires when the tread wear indicators appear. Brake gently whenever roads are wet, snowy, or icy to reduce the possibility of losing control of the vehicle.

Tire Maintenance

In addition to proper inflation, proper wheel alignment helps reduce tire wear. If you notice that a tire is wearing unevenly, have the alignment checked by a dealer.

When installing new tires, make sure they are balanced. This will improve ride comfort and tire life. In addition, the tire should always be rebalanced if it has been removed from the wheel.
