Electric power steering
The motor-driven power steering assists you in steering the vehicle. When the engine is off or the power steering fails, the vehicle can still be steered, but more effort is required. The electric power steering is controlled by the control module, which detects the steering wheel torque, steering angle and vehicle speed and sends the appropriate control commands to the motor.
The steering effort required increases at higher speeds and decreases at lower speeds to make steering easier.
If you notice that the steering effort required for normal driving has changed, have the system tested by a qualified workshop. Kia recommends visiting a Kia dealer or authorized service partner.
NOTICE
The following symptoms may appear during normal vehicle operation:
- The EPS warning light does not illuminate.
- The steering wheel may feel stiff immediately after the ignition switch is turned ON. This is because the EPS system performs a diagnostic test. When the diagnosis is complete, the steering wheel will again turn with normal effort.
- After the ignition switch is turned to ON or LOCK, a click may be heard from the EPS relay.
- When the vehicle is stopped or driven at low speed, a motor noise may be heard.
- If the electric power steering does not operate normally, the warning light on the instrument cluster illuminates. The steering wheel requires more effort or does not operate as usual. In this case, have the system checked by a qualified workshop. Kia recommends visiting a Kia dealer or authorized service partner.
- The steering effort increases when the steering wheel is turned continuously while the vehicle is not moving. It returns to normal after a few minutes.
- Unusual sounds may be heard when turning the steering wheel at low temperatures. If the temperature rises, these sounds disappear. This is normal.
- When the charging system warning light illuminates or the voltage is low (because the alternator or battery is not operating correctly), the steering may become heavy and operate abnormally.
