When the Engine Overheats

~2min read

1. Stop the vehicle at the next safe location off the road.

2. Shift to Neutral (manual transmission) or Park (P) (automatic transmission) and apply the parking brake. If the air conditioner is on, turn it off.

3. Turn off the engine if coolant is leaking or steam is coming from under the hood. Do not open the hood until coolant and steam stop escaping. If no coolant loss is visible and no steam is escaping, leave the engine running and check whether the radiator fan is running. If the fan is not running, turn off the engine.

4. Check whether the coolant pump drive belt is missing. If the drive belt is still present, check whether it is adequately tensioned. If the belt appears adequately tensioned, check whether coolant is leaking from the radiator or coolant hoses or dripping from the underside of the vehicle. (If the air conditioner was operating, it is normal for cold water to drip from the air conditioner when the vehicle is stopped.)

WARNING

With the engine running, keep your hair, hands, and clothing away from moving parts such as the fan and drive belts to avoid injury.

5. If the coolant pump drive belt is defective or coolant is leaking, turn off the engine immediately and contact a repair shop. Kia recommends calling a Kia dealer/service partner.

WARNING

Do not remove the radiator cap while the engine is still hot. Boiling hot coolant may escape under pressure, and there is a risk of scalding.

6. If you cannot determine the cause of the overheating, first wait until the engine has cooled to a normal temperature. Then, if necessary, carefully add coolant to the reservoir until the coolant level is midway between the MIN and MAX marks.

7. Drive carefully and constantly watch for signs of overheating again. If the vehicle overheats again, contact a repair shop. Kia recommends calling a Kia dealer/service partner.

WARNING

  • A significant loss of coolant indicates a leak in the cooling system. Have the system inspected at a repair shop. Kia recommends visiting a Kia dealer/service partner.
  • If the engine overheats due to too little coolant, the engine may be damaged when coolant is added suddenly. To avoid damage, add engine coolant slowly and in small quantities.
