Jump Starting the Engine

Starting an engine with jumper cables can be dangerous if the jump start is performed incorrectly. To avoid personal injury and damage to your vehicle and vehicle battery, follow the instructions for starting. Have the vehicle jump started by a qualified technician or roadside assistance service if you are not sure of the procedure.

WARNING

Use only a 12 V battery or a 12 V jump starting system. Using a 24 V power source (two batteries connected in series or a 24 V generator) may cause irreparable damage to the vehicle's electrical system, including the starter, ignition system and other components.

WARNING

Battery

Never attempt to check the specific gravity of the battery electrolyte. The battery could rupture or explode and cause serious injury.

WARNING

Battery

  • Keep sparks and open flames away from the battery. The battery produces hydrogen gas, which can ignite and explode from sparks or flames. Failure to follow these instructions exactly may result in serious injury and damage to the vehicle. If you are not sure you can perform the steps of this procedure, call qualified assistance. The automotive battery contains sulfuric acid. It is poisonous and extremely corrosive. When performing this procedure, wear safety goggles and make sure that acid does not contact you, your clothing, or the vehicle.
  • Never attempt to start the engine with jumper cables if the discharged battery is frozen or the electrolyte level is low. The battery could rupture or explode.
  • Make sure the jumper cables (+) and (-) do not touch each other. This may cause sparks.
  • The battery may rupture or explode if you attempt to start the vehicle with a frozen battery or a low-capacity battery.

Vorgehensweise beim Fremdstart

1. Make sure the booster battery is a 12 V battery and that its negative cable is connected to vehicle ground.

2. If the booster battery is located in another vehicle, the vehicles must not touch each other.

3. Schalten Sie alle nicht beötigten elektrischen Verbraucher ab.

4. Connect the jumper cables exactly in the sequence shown in the illustration. First connect one clamp of the positive (red) cable to the positive terminal of the discharged battery (1). Then connect the other clamp of the positive (red) cable to the positive terminal of the booster battery (2). Next connect one clamp of the negative (black) cable to the negative terminal of the booster battery (3). Connect the other clamp of the negative (black) cable to a solid, stationary metal part (e.g., engine lifting bracket) in the engine compartment of the vehicle to be started, at a distance from the battery (4). Do not attach the clamp to or near a component that moves when the engine starts. Make sure the cable clamps do not touch any other parts except the specified battery terminals or the specified ground point on the engine. Do not lean over the battery while attaching the clamps to the battery terminals.

WARNING

Battery cable

Connect the jumper cable from the negative terminal of the booster battery to a point near the negative terminal of the discharged battery. The discharged battery may overheat, crack, and battery acid may leak. Make sure to connect one end of the jumper cable to the negative terminal of the booster battery and the other end to a metal component as far from the battery as possible.

5. Start the engine of the booster vehicle and let it run at approx. 2000 rpm. Then start the engine of the vehicle with the discharged battery.

Fahrzeug anschieben

A vehicle with manual transmission should not be push-started, as the emission control system could be damaged. Vehicles with automatic or dual-clutch transmission cannot be push-started.

Follow the instructions in the 'Jump Starting' section on page 7-05.

WARNING

Never attempt to start a vehicle by towing it. If the engine suddenly starts, there is a risk of running into the towing vehicle.
