Underbody Maintenance

~1min read

Corrosive materials used for ice and snow removal and dust control can accumulate on the underbody. If these materials are not removed, accelerated rusting may occur on underbody components such as fuel lines, frame, floor pan and exhaust system, even though they are treated with rust-proofing.

Thoroughly wash the underbody and wheel wells with warm or cold water once a month, after driving on unpaved roads, and at the end of each winter. Pay special attention to these areas, as it is difficult to see all the dirt and mud. Washing road dirt without removing it will do more harm than good. The lower edges of the doors, sills and frame members have drain holes that must not be allowed to become clogged with dirt; water trapped in these areas may cause rust.

WARNING

After washing the vehicle, check the brakes at low speed to make sure they have not been affected by water. If braking efficiency is reduced, dry the brakes by applying them lightly while maintaining a slow forward speed.
