ENGINE START/STOP button position

~4min read

OFF

• With manual transaxle

To turn off the engine (START/RUN position) or vehicle power (ON position), stop the vehicle, then press the ENGINE START/STOP button.

• With automatic transaxle

To turn off the engine (START/RUN position) or vehicle power (ON position), press the ENGINE START/STOP button with the shift lever in the P (Park) position. If you press the ENGINE START/STOP button without the shift lever in the P (Park) position, the ENGINE START/STOP button will not switch to the OFF position, but to the ACC position.

In addition, the steering wheel locks when the ENGINE START/STOP button is in the OFF position to help protect against theft. It locks when the driver's door is opened.

Vehicles Equipped with Anti-Theft Steering Column Lock

The steering wheel locks when the ENGINE START/STOP button is in the OFF position to help protect against theft. It locks when the driver's door is opened.

If the steering wheel is not properly locked when the driver's door is opened, a warning chime will sound. If the problem persists, have the system inspected at a professional workshop. Kia recommends visiting an authorized Kia dealer/service partner.

In addition, if the ENGINE START/STOP button is in the OFF position after the driver's door is opened, the steering wheel will not lock and a warning chime will sound. In this case, close the door. The steering wheel will then lock, and the warning chime will stop.

NOTICE

If the steering wheel is not unlocked properly, the ENGINE START/STOP button will not operate. Press the ENGINE START/STOP button while turning the steering wheel to the right to release the pressure.

  • If you have difficulty turning the ENGINE START/STOP button to the ACC position, turn the steering wheel to the right and left to release the pressure while pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button.
  • When you turn off the engine, the vehicle must be stopped.

CAUTION

You can turn off the engine (START/RUN) or vehicle power (ON) only when the vehicle is not moving. In an emergency while the vehicle is moving, you can turn off the engine and go to the ACC position by pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button for more than 2 seconds, or 3 times in succession within 3 seconds. If the vehicle is still moving, you can restart the engine without pressing the brake pedal by pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button with the shift lever in the N (Neutral) position.

ACC (Accessory)

• With manual transaxle

Press the ENGINE START/STOP button when it is in the OFF position without depressing the clutch pedal.

• With automatic transaxle

Press the ENGINE START/STOP button when it is in the OFF position without depressing the brake pedal. The steering wheel unlocks and electrical accessories become operational. If the ENGINE START/STOP button remains in the ACC position for more than 1 hour, the button will turn off automatically to prevent battery discharge.

ON

• With manual transaxle

Press the ENGINE START/STOP button when it is in the ACC position without depressing the clutch pedal.

• With automatic transaxle

Press the ENGINE START/STOP button when it is in the ACC position without depressing the brake pedal. Warning lights can be checked before starting the engine. Do not leave the ENGINE START/STOP button in the ON position for a long time. The battery may discharge because the engine is not running.

START/RUN

• With manual transaxle

To start the engine, depress the clutch pedal and the brake pedal, then press the ENGINE START/STOP button with the shift lever in the N (Neutral) position.

• With automatic transaxle

To start the engine, depress the brake pedal and press the ENGINE START/STOP button with the shift lever in the P (Park) or N (Neutral) position. For safety, start the engine with the shift lever in the P (Park) position.

NOTICE

If you press the ENGINE START/STOP button without depressing the clutch pedal (vehicles with manual transaxle) or without depressing the brake pedal (vehicles with automatic transaxle), the engine will not start and the ENGINE START/STOP button will change as follows:

OFF → ACC → ON → OFF or ACC

NOTICE

If the ENGINE START/STOP button is left in the ACC or ON position for a long time, the battery will discharge.

WARNING

  • Never press the ENGINE START/STOP button while the vehicle is moving. This will result in loss of steering and braking functions, which may cause an accident.
  • The steering column lock does not replace the parking brake. Before leaving the driver's seat, always make sure the shift lever is in the P (Park) position, fully apply the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Unexpected and sudden vehicle movement may occur if these precautions are not observed.
  • Never reach for the ENGINE START/STOP button or any other control through the steering wheel while the vehicle is moving. Having your hand or arm in this area may cause loss of vehicle control, an accident, and serious injury or death.
  • Do not place loose objects around the driver's seat where they may move while driving, interfere with the driver, and cause an accident.
