Parking Brake
Applying the parking brake

To apply the parking brake, first depress the brake pedal, then pull the parking brake lever up fully. In addition, when parking the vehicle on a slope, it is recommended that the shift lever be placed in low gear on vehicles with a manual transmission, or in the P (Park) position on vehicles with an automatic transmission.
CAUTION
- Driving with the parking brake applied will cause excessive wear of the brake pads and brake disc.
- Do not use the parking brake while the vehicle is moving, except in an emergency. This could damage the vehicle system and compromise driving safety.
Releasing the Parking Brake

To release the parking brake, first depress the brake pedal and pull the parking brake lever up slightly. Second, press the release button (1) and lower the parking brake lever (2) while holding the button.
If the parking brake does not release or does not release fully, have the system inspected by a professional workshop. Kia recommends visiting an authorized Kia dealer/service partner.
WARNING
- To prevent unintended movement of the vehicle when stopped and left unattended, do not use the shift lever in place of the parking brake. Apply the parking brake AND make sure the shift lever is securely in the P (Park) position for vehicles with an automatic transmission.
- Never allow anyone unfamiliar with the vehicle to touch the parking brake. If the parking brake is released unintentionally, serious injury may occur.
- Always make sure the parking brake is fully applied when parking all vehicles to avoid unintended movement of the vehicle, which could injure passengers or pedestrians.

Check the brake warning lamp by turning the ignition switch ON (do not start the engine). This lamp will illuminate when the parking brake is applied with the ignition switch in the START or ON position.
Before driving, make sure the parking brake is fully released and the brake warning light is off.
If the brake warning lamp remains illuminated after releasing the parking brake with the engine running, there may be a malfunction in the brake system. Immediate attention is required.
If possible, stop driving the vehicle immediately. If this is not possible, be extremely careful when operating the vehicle and continue driving only until you can reach a safe location or a repair shop.
