SRS Components and Functions

The SRS consists of the following components:
1. Driver Front Airbag Module
2. Front Passenger Airbag Module
3. Side Airbag Modules
4. Curtain Airbag Modules
5. Seat Belt Pretensioner Assemblies
6. Airbag Warning Light
7. SRS Control Module (SRSCM)/Rollover Sensor
8. Side Impact Sensors
9. Front Passenger Airbag ON/OFF Switch
10. Front Passenger Airbag ON/OFF Indicator
The SRSCM continuously monitors all SRS components when the ignition switch is ON to determine whether the collision is severe enough to require airbag deployment or seat belt pretensioner activation.
SRS Airbag Warning Light "
" on the instrument panel illuminates for approximately 6 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, after which the SRS airbag warning light "
" should go off.
WARNING
If any of the following conditions occur, this indicates a malfunction in the SRS. In this case, have the system inspected by a professional workshop. Kia recommends visiting an authorized Kia dealer/service partner.
- The light does not illuminate briefly when the ignition is turned ON.
- The light remains on after illuminating for approximately 6 seconds.
- The light comes on while the vehicle is in motion.
- The light flashes when the ignition switch is in the ON position.

The airbag modules are located in the center of the steering wheel and in the front passenger panel above the glove box. When the SRSCM detects a sufficiently strong impact to the front of the vehicle, it automatically deploys the front airbags.

When deployed, tear seams form directly in the trim covers, which separate under the pressure of expanding airbags. Further opening of the covers then allows the airbags to fully inflate.

A fully inflated airbag, combined with a properly fastened seat belt, slows the forward movement of the driver or front passenger, reducing the risk of head and chest injuries.
After full deployment, the airbag immediately begins to deflate, allowing the driver to maintain forward visibility and the ability to steer and operate the other controls.

WARNING
- Do not install or place accessories (cup holder, sticker, etc.) on the passenger-side instrument panel above the glove box in a vehicle with a passenger airbag. Such objects can become dangerous projectiles and cause injury if the passenger airbag deploys.
- When installing a liquid-filled vehicle air freshener, do not place it near the instrument cluster or on the instrument panel surface. It can become a dangerous projectile and cause injury if the passenger airbag deploys.
WARNING
- When an airbag deploys, a loud noise and a fine dust may fill the vehicle. These conditions are normal and not dangerous. The airbags are packed with this fine powder. The dust created when an airbag deploys may cause skin or eye irritation and may aggravate asthma in some people. Always wash all exposed skin thoroughly with cold water and mild soap after an accident in which the airbags have deployed.
- The SRS can only operate when the ignition switch is in the ON position. If the SRS "
" warning light does not come on, stays on continuously after illuminating for about 6 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, or after starting the engine, or comes on while driving, the SRS is not operating properly. In this case, have the system checked at a professional workshop. Kia recommends visiting an authorized Kia dealer/service partner. - Before replacing a fuse or disconnecting the battery terminal, turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and remove the ignition key. Never remove or replace the airbag fuse(s) when the ignition switch is in the ON position. Failure to follow this warning may cause the SRS to malfunction.
