Airbag Module Disposal
Description and Operation
Airbag Disposal
Special Service Tools Required
Deployment Tool 0957A-34100A
Before disposing of any airbags or side airbags (including those in a complete vehicle for disposal), the airbags or side airbags must be deployed. If the vehicle is still within the warranty period, the Technical Manager must give permission and/or special instructions before the airbags or side airbags are deployed. Only after the airbags or side airbags have been deployed (for example, as a result of a vehicle collision) may they be disposed of. If the airbags or side airbags appear undamaged (not deployed), handle them with special care. Follow this procedure.
Deploying Airbags In the Vehicle
If a vehicle equipped with an SRS is to be completely scrapped, its airbags or side airbags must be deployed while still in the vehicle. Airbags or side airbags are not considered repairable parts and must never be installed in another vehicle.
Turn the ignition OFF and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Wait at least three minutes.
Make sure each airbag or side airbag is securely mounted.
Make sure the special tool operates correctly by following the check procedure.
Driver airbag:
Remove the driver airbag and install the SST (0K57A-3U100A).
Install the driver airbag onto the steering wheel.
Front passenger airbag:
Remove the glove box housing, then disconnect the connector between the passenger airbag and the main SRS harness.
Install the SST (0K57A-3U100A).
Side airbag:
Disconnect the 2-pin connector between the side airbag and the wire harness.
Install the SST (0957A-2W100).
Curtain airbag:
Disconnect the 2-pin connector between the curtain airbag and the wire harness.
Install the SST (0K57A-3U100A).
Seat belt pretensioner:
Disconnect the 2P connector from the seat belt pretensioner.
Install the SST (0K57A-3U100A).
Emergency tensioning device:
Disconnect the 2-pin connector from the anchor pretensioner.
Install the SST (0K57A-3U100A).
Place the deployment tool at least thirty feet (10 meters) away from the airbag.
Connect a 12-volt battery to the tool.
Press the deployment tool switch. The airbag should deploy (deployment is clearly heard and seen: a loud noise and rapid inflation of the bag followed by slow deflation).
Dispose of the airbag as a complete unit. No parts may be reused. Place it in a strong polyethylene bag and seal it securely.
Deploying Airbags Removed from the Vehicle
If an undamaged airbag has been removed from a scrapped vehicle, or found to be defective or damaged during transport, storage or service, it must be deployed as follows:
Confirm the special tool operates correctly by performing the check procedure on this page.
Place the airbag face up with the EFD (Emergency Fastening Device) and Active Hood Actuator stacked no more than 5 tires high, outdoors on a level surface at least thirty feet (10 meters) away from any obstacles or people.
Disposing of Damaged Airbags
If installed in the vehicle, perform the removal procedure for the driver airbag, passenger airbag and side airbag.
In all cases, short the airbag inflator wires by twisting the two wires together.
Package the airbag in the same way as the new replacement part.
