Description and Operation

Description

The emission control system consists of three main systems.

  • The Crankcase Emission Control System prevents crankcase gases from being released into the atmosphere. This system burns these gases after routing them to the intake manifold (closed crankcase ventilation).

  • The Evaporative Emission Control System prevents fuel vapor from being released into the atmosphere. This system burns the vapors under proper engine operating conditions after collecting them in the canister.

  • The Exhaust Emission Control System converts three pollutants: hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless substances using a three-way catalytic converter.
